Mary VanScyoc


Mary Elizabeth (Chance) VanScyoc, 91, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 9,
2011.
Visitation will be held 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13, at Dunsford-Zeiner Funeral Home, Augusta. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, at Faith Christian Church, 2110 W. 45th St., South in Wichita. Interment to follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Augusta.
Mary was born on Dec. 26,1919 to Gerald and Lois Chance in Wichita. She obtained her pilots license at age 20, graduated from Wichita University and became the first female air traffic controller in the United States in June of 1942. Mary married Evart Breece VanScyoc on Oct. 10,1947 in Wichita. She taught girls P.E. and started an aviation class in Augusta from 1961-1974. Mary wrote a book entitled "A Lifetime of Chances" and was inducted into the Kansas Aviation Hall of Fame in 2002.
Survivors include: her daughters, Betty Carson of Wichita and Martha Shaw and her husband Mark of Gainesville, Fla.; five grandchildren, Danny (Tifyne) Carter, Paula (Sam) Holland, David (Kira) Carter, Ronda (Robert) Thomas and Gina (Curtis) Baxter; 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; spouse; son, Gary; brother, Richard Harold Chance, and a sister Geraldine Chance.
A memorial has been established with the Kansas Aviation Museum, 3350 S. George Washington Blvd, Wichita, KS 67210 or in care of Dunsford-Zeiner Funeral Home, Augusta.

Clare Patterson, Jr.

Clare Patterson, Jr., 71, of Apache Junction, Ariz., formerly of rural Butler County, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 3,2011.
A memorial service at the family farm will be held in July.
He is survived by: his wife, Helen; son, Anthony Wayne (Karen) Patterson of Augusta; daughter, Robin C. Parezanine of Palm Desert, Calif.; brothers, Dalton (Sonja) Patterson, and Allan (Barbara) Patterson, all of Augusta; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clare Patterson Sr. and his mother, Jessie Patterson.
Memorials may go to the Humane Society.


Burlin L. Vorhies

Burlin L. Vorhies, 78, Augusta passed away Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011.
Visitation 5-7 p.m. Sunday, at the LakePoint Theatre, Augusta. Service 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, 2011 at First Baptist Church, Augusta. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
Burlin was born in Clearfield, Iowa on Sept. 18,1932, the son of the late Laurel "Jack" and Eva (Wornstaff) Vorhies. He was a retired machinist from Boeing, a retired firefighter from the City of Augusta, a retired chief from the US Naval Reserve, police dispatcher, and school bus driver. On June 12, 1955 he married Ilah Wheat in Cedar Falls, Iowa and she survives.
He is also survived by: son, Richard Vorhies (Suzanne) of Topeka; daughters, Marjorie Melton (David) of Augusta, Alice Linson of Green River, Wyo. and Laura Deckert (James) of Salina; brother, William Vorhies of Keokuk, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Eulalia Vorhies of Tahuya, Wash.; grandchildren, Charissa Williams (Michael), Chara Skahan (Brian), Paula Linson (fiance Ray Torrez), Kenneth Linson (Michelle), Jack Vorhies, Joshua Vorhies, Rebecca Armendariz, Shawn Vorhies, and Abigail, Naomi, Elijah and Isaiah Deckert; 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by: son, Marshall L. Vorhies; granddaughter, Teresa Lynn Linson; brothers, Marshall E. and Maurice Vorhies; and son-in-law, Stanley Linson.
Memorials to American Diabetes Association.
