Joe Thomas "Tom" Zinn III
59, AUGUSTA

Joe Thomas "Tom" Zinn III, 59, Augusta, left this world peacefully Sunday,
Aug. 9, 2012.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, at LakePoint, 901 Lake-Point, Augusta.
Tom was born in Oklahoma City on Sept. 8,1952 to the late Marilynn Rae (McCoy) Zinn and Joe Thomas Zinn Jr.
He graduated from Augusta High School in 1970 and attended Butler Community College. He joined the National Guard in 1972 and served six
years.
He was married to Rhonda Ewalt on Aug. 8, 1972. He was a carpet layer for 15 years, worked in construction, and owned and operated Tom’s Home Care for 20 years. He was also a carpenter and craftsman and took pride in building and restoring furniture.
He loved music and would often sing a line or two from a song that fit the activity at hand, always surprising someone.
He started racing remote control cars in the mid 80’s. He continued racing for several years with a group of friends who formed the Acorn Racing Team, traveling in the Midwest area racing competitively.
Tom is survived by: his wife, Rhonda, of the home; his son, Pvt Joe Thomas Zinn IV of the United States Army, Ft. Stewart, Ga.; his father, Joe (Marilyn) Zinn Jr., Tucson, Ariz.; sister, Kar-ren (Mike) Zinn Herman, Tucson, Ariz.; brothers, Larry (Kathy) Zinn, Dallas, Texas, and Mark Zinn, Eagle Point, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Joe Zinn Memorial Fund, in care of Dunsford Funeral Home.




Col. James "Jim" Andrews
91, WILMINGTON, NC

Col. James Lawrence Andrews, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012.
The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 21 at the Andrews Mortuary, Market Street Chapel. Jim will be buried with honors at the Arlington National Cemetery along side his wife Kay.
Born in Wilmington, NC, on May 12,1921, Jim was the fourth of six children of his parents Leon Forest Andrews and Bessie Edens Andrews. Jim graduated from New Hanover High School in 1938 and earned his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Nebraska.
Jim joined the United States Army in 1940 as a private in the Coast Artillery and retired 30 years later as a full Colonel in the regular army, ending his career as a base commander in Viet Nam. Serving with the 6th Infantry Division in the Pacific during WWII, Jim fought engagements from New Guinea to the Philippines where he earned two Bronze Stars with oak leaf cluster for valor. He was also awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received as a rifle platoon leader during the battle for Luzon.
While recovering from his wounds in the military hospital at Ft. Carson, Colo., Jim was nursed by his future wife and lifelong partner, Blanche Kathlyn “Kay” Magers of Augusta, who passed away in 2009 after 64 years together.
Highlights in Jim's military career following WWII include service in Italy immediately after the war, a tour in Japan serving as commanding officer of Gen. Douglas MacArthur's Honor Guard during the Korean War, Guide Officer for the State Funeral of John F. Kennedy where he escorted family members and dignitaries attending the funeral, and earned his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Nebraska.

Andrews of Atlanta, Amelia A. Abbott of Charlotte, and Emma K. Andrews and Holly C. Andrews of Huntingtown, Md.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations sent to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington.
