Mel E. Adams
Former Augustan Mel E. Adams, 80, Lawrence, died Saturday, March 27, 1999 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 30, at the Warren-McEl-wain Mortuary in Lawrence.
Adams was born Nov. 13, 1918 near Springfield, Mo., as the son of William Silas and Maggie Ann Nelson Adams.
He graduated from Augusta High School and worked summer for the Augusta Daily Gazette.
He received his undergraduate degree from KU and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he worked for the Kansas City Star and was publisher of a newspaper in Tennessee. He received his master’s degree in journalism from the University of Iowa.
Adams was a retired associate professor of journalism at the University of Kansas. He was well known for teaching advertisising and his beginning course was known as “Mele-ments of Advertising.”
Memorial contributions to the Mel Adams Award Fun at the KU School of Journalism have been suggested.
Ruth G. Green
Ruth G. “Susie” Green, 62, of Augusta died Tuesday, March 30, 1999 at her home.
Graveside services were held at today, April 1, 1999 at Walnut Valley Memorial Park, officiated by Rev. Stan Seymour.
She was born April 9, 1936 in El Dorado, the daughter of Clarence A. and Ruth Archer Gates.
She spent most of her life in Kansas, except for 20 years when she lived in Lousiana and Arkansas.
She was a member of First Christian Church. She had worked as a security guard at Texaco Refinery.
She is survived by: two sons, Dennis and Vance Pickard, both of SpringhilI, La.; her stepmother, Wanda Gates of El Dorado; a half-brother, Dennis Gates of El Dorado; two sisters, Sandra Arbogast of El Dorado and Genieve Metz of Eufaula, Okla.; her mother, Ruth Pierson of Eldon, Mo., and three grandsons.
Memorials in her memory for the American Cancer Society or the Kansas Humane Society may be left at Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado.
John McKaskle
John Wright McKaskle, 79, of Augusta, died Wednesday, June 30, 1999.
Visitation is today, July 2, 1999 until 8:30 p.m. at the Bob Lamb Funeral Home Chapel at 216 S. Main, Whitewater. Graveside service will be Saturday, July 3,1999 at 2 p.m. at Custer Cemetery in Augusta.
He was born July 14, 1919 in Louisiana to John McKaskle and Mattie Newson.
He married .Thelma Carrie Mitchell. She died April 15,1998.
He was a self-employed welder and a veteran of World War II.
He is survived by: daughter, Melissa Hunn of Potwin; sister, Mildred Womack of Okla.; and two grandchildren.

Viola B. Haynes, 59, died Friday, April 7, 1999 in Augusta.
Her funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 1999 at Dunsford Funeral Home Memorial Chapel. Rev. Neal Alford of First Baptist Church of Douglass will officiate and burial Will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Augusta.
Visitation will until 8 p.m. tonight at Dunsford Funeral Home of Augusta/
She was born on Aug. 28, 1939 in Hinton, Okla.
Viola was a bookkeeper for Haynes Plumbing in Augusta.
She was preceded in death by her father, Claude I. Muncy. She is survived by: her mother, Thelda Laura Fossett Muncy; husband, Donald Haynes of Augusta; sons, Terry D. Hayes of Augusta and Donald Duane Haynew, Jr. of Douglass; daughters, Trudi Haynes of Topeka and Dana Mendenhall of Tacoma, Wash.; brother Roy George Muncy of Erie; and seven grandchildren.
Casketbearers will be: Bill Stroud, Randy Hardey, Dennis Burk, Dean Holloway, Bob Besecker and Jim Dick.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Inc., of Wichita.

The date of death for Viola B. Haynes was listed incorrectly in Monday’s Gazette. She died Friday, April 2, 1999. Her funeral was today, April 6, at Dunsford Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Rev. Neal Alford of First Baptist Church of Douglass officiating. Burial was at Elmwood Cemetery.
Her surviving sons are Terry D. Haynes of Augusta and Donald Wayne Haynes Jr. of Douglass.
