Funeral 11 a.m. Thursday for slain school teacher at church in Pratt
Jason Wayne Befort
Jason Wayne Befort, 26, Wichita, one of the four victims of last Friday’s shooting in Wichita, will be laid to rest Thursday following a funeral service at the First United Methodist Church in Pratt.
He was a teacher at Augusta High School.
That service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, at the church with Rev. James Dieker officiating. The casket will remain closed.
Burial will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery at Pratt.
A vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pratt.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the
Jason W. Befort Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the Ayres-Calbeck Funeral Home at Pratt.
Befort was born Oct. 31, 1974 in Pratt, to Ken D. and Lois J. Fisher Befort, who survive.
He was a science teacher at Augusta High School,
Augusta. He also coached middle school football, junior varsity basketball and track.
Friends may sign the register book at Ayres-Calbeck Mortuary, 115 E. Fourth, Pratt.
He graduated from Pratt High in 1993 and attended Pratt Community Junior College one year and transferred to Kansas State University, graduated in 1998, with a degree in education, and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and a member of KSU Alumni Association. He was also a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pratt.
He is survived by his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Lisa Befort of Pratt; sister and brother-in-law Kim and Ken Voss of Mulvane; nephews, Trey and Trent Befort; and nieces, Kelsie, Kylie and Macie Voss.
Jason was preceded in death by his grandparents, Cy and Clara Befort and Earnest and Vera Fisher.
Ayres-Calbeck, Mortuary in Pratt is in charge of arrange-ments.
Memorial service tomorrow in Augusta High auditorium
A memorial service for Augusta High School science teacher Jason Befort, who died Friday, Dec. 15, will be held at 4 p.m . tomorrow in the auditorium of Augusta High School, 2020 Ohio.
Father Samuel Pinkerton of St. James Catholic Church will be one of the speakers at this service. Other possible speakers were being contacted at press time today.
AHS staffers, students and friends are invited to attend the service in an attempt to bring closure to this tragedy within the local school district.
The Augusta High School Oriole basketball team which Befort helped coach is planning to attend Thursday’s funeral service in Pratt. Befort (second from left on the back row) is pictured below with the basketball team. He was an assistant with the junior varsity team.
Befort taught and coached at Augusta Middle School before joining the AHS teaching/coaching staff last school year.
