AHS teacher-coach Befort buried in hometown

A grieving community laid Jason W. Befort to rest Thursday at Greenlawn Cemetery. He was one of four friends tragically murdered Dec. 15 in Wichita.
Preceding the interment, services were held at the First United Methodist Church to accommodate close family, friends, teachers, and students. They gathered in prayer and celebration of Befort's life.
He was a teacher-coach at Augusta High School,
Father James Dieker presided over a two-hour Catholic service of Sacred Heart parish.
Before the service, Sheila Gawith sang "Friends (Are Friends Forever)" in memory of Befort and his friends.
Members of the Augusta basketball team that Befort coached solemnly walked into the church together dressed in matching attire.
After the family procession, which included Befort's fiancee, the only survivor of the attack, the audience joined in an opening song. Scripture was pro-
claimed by parishioners Ruth Menzer and Glenna Borho, and Father Henry Hildebrandt of Liberal. Song leader Nancy Kisner was accompanied by Louise Turner.
Father Dieker's homily included heartfelt condolences to the Befort family and to Befort's fiancee, whom had all endured so much. He noted how Befort's life reflected the life of Christ.
"He was a teacher and a leader also," said Dieker. "We believe he lives, and it gives us hope."
Dieker also spoke of forgiveness.
"There is a just rage to such a horrendous crime against humanity, but we are called to peace in Christ, who spoke on the cross, "Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.'"
Father Dieker concluded by quoting a parent of another victim, "I do not want you to remember my son for how he died, but for how he lived."
After the mass, friends spoke in remembrance of Befort. Casey Carlson, Cindy Robertson, and Todd Sibley each took a turn at the podium, as did Befort's fiancee.
