Banker Newton Male dies at 69
Longtime Augusta banker W. Newton Male, 69, died Sunday, April 20.
He found many ways to serve this community and this* area.
He was a former mayor of Augusta, former president of the Augusta school board, state representative and state banking commissioner.
His funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, at Augusta First Baptist Church.
Male was saluted by the Kansas Bankers Association for 50 years of serving the financial needs of people. He received the 50-year plaque during a recent KBA luncheon in Topeka.
In an interview last year about that
KBA achievement, he said, “Throughout my banking career, I’ve always looked for ways to help people. Banks have the ability to help folks before they have the money in hand.”
“I’ve always told others in the banking industry, if you look for ways to help people, the bottom line will take care of itself,” he said.
Male came to Augusta in 1960 and worked through various managerial positions at Prairie State Bank before becoming chairman of the PSB board of directors.
“In the old days, everything was done by hand,” said Male who often burned the midnight oil calculating interest on accounts and taking care of payroll.
He said today’s laws allowing multiple bank branches has helped Prairie State Bank to continue as one of the state’s leading financial institutions. Prairie State has 13 branches in the Wichita area.
He was a past president of the Kansas Bankers Association, a past director of the Wichita Area Girl Scout Council, and member of the loan committee of the South Central Kansas Economic Development District (SCKEDD).
When he was not banking or serving on some board, his agricultural interests rose and Male enjoyed the outdoors by working on his farm and ranch properties.
Male funeral at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow
Current mayor offers sympathy
Current Augusta Mayor Ross Rountree expressed sympathy to the family and friends of W. Newton Male at the beginning of Monday night’s council meeting.
Rountree said Male, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Prairie State Bank, will be missed as a leader of this community.
The 69-year-old Male died Sunday, April 20. As part of his civic involvement, he served as Augusta’s mayor from 1969-73.
His funeral service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at First Baptist Church, State & Kelly.
The Dunsford Funeral Home of Augusta is in charge of arrangements.
