Walter Newton "Newt" Male, Jr., 69, of Augusta died on Sunday, April 20, 2003. Viewing 4:00 - 8:00 Tuesday, April 22 at Dunsford Funeral Home, Augusta, Kansas. Services will be held at 10:30 on Wednesday, April 23 at First Baptist Church in Augusta, Kansas.
Newton was born to Walter Newton Male, Sr. and Meda Batchelor Male on June 8, 1933 in Pueblo, Colorado. As a young boy, Newt spent a great deal of time with his grandfathers on their farms near Wakefield, Kansas. He enjoyed Boy Scouts, camping, fishing, and helping out around the family farms, thus establishing his love of nature and setting the stage for years of enjoyment on his own farms in Butler, Greenwood, and Marion counties. During his | lifetime, most weekends were spent communing with nature and God while building fences, painting barns, and watching over the creeks and flinthills of eastern Kansas.
As a young man, Newt joined the Forest Service in Idaho after graduating from Wichita High School East in 1951. Newt graduated from Kansas State University in 1956 and married his childhood friend Maxine Snider in 1958. From this 24 year marriage came his two beloved daughters, Shari and Kristen.
Mr. Male was recognized by
the Kansas Bankers Association for 50 years in banking this year. He started his career at the Boulevard State Bank, worked as a bank examiner for the FDIC, and was employed by the Farmers and Merchant State Bank in Derby prior to joining the Prairie State Bank of Augusta in 1960, as cashier. Mr. Male graduated from the Graduate School of Banking in Madison, Wisconsin in 1963. Over 42 years, Newt led the Prairie State Bank in its growth to 13 locations around the Wichita area. He instilled in employees a strong commitment to helping people. At the time of his death, Newt was the Chairman of the Board and CEO
of the Bank. He served as president of the Kansas Bankers Association and served two terms as Kansas Bank Commissioner under Governors Hayden and Graves. During the tumultuous banking environment of the 1980s, Mr. Male was credited with saving many of the banks in Kansas through his leadership. He acted as an advocate for community banks in the state and was very active in the American Bankers Association. Newt was honored to travel to Samara and Novosibirsk, Russia with the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and taught the principles of western banking and economics to Russian bankers.
Mr. Male loved the community of Augusta, Kansas and took an active role in promoting the town, serving on the Augusta Hospital Board, Four Winds Girl Scout Council, two terms as Mayor, president of the Augusta Board of Education, and also served as State Representative for the 77th District in the Kansas State Legislature. Newt enjoyed taking flying lessons and piloted planes to destinations such as the Philippine Islands. He loved to travel, especially with his daughters to the birthplace of his ancestors near Cambridge, England. Always an outdoors man, one of Newt's greatest accomplishments and memories was climbing the highest peaks in the Rocky
Mountains with his friend Judy Conners. Newt put a great deal of faith in God and appreciated God's creations, especially mountains, trees, lakes, rivers, and wildlife.

Mr. Male .is survived by daughter Shari Male of Dallas, Texas; daughter Kristen Male Tinker and her husband Mark Tinker of Merritt Island, Florida; grandson Harrison Tinker; sister Patricia Male of Wichita; sister Donna Hershey and her husband Jay Hershey of Wichita; nieces and nephews Jerry and Tracey Hershey, Jill Hershey, Julie Hershey Bergen, Andrew Bergen; and great-nieces Natasha Hershey Bergen and Alyssa Hershey.
Newt will be missed by his family and many friends from banking, farming, politics, volunteering, and community involvement. A memorial has been established with Augusta's Relay For Life, sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Donations should be made payable to the Augusta Relay For Life and mailed to Prairie State Bank, P.O. Box 520, Augusta, KS. 67010.
