Campfire Burns Rural Fisherman
Flames from a campfire engulfed Ernie Eshelman, causing his death as he fished on Hickory Creek Monday afternoon.
The body of the 82-year-old rural Leon man was found Tuesday afternoon 4 1/2 miles south of U.S. 54 on the Haverhill Road.
Sheriff’s officers were called to the scene around 1:30 p.m. yesterday.
Eshelman’s extensively burned body was found on the river bank.
At first, authorities believed Eshelman might have suffered a heart attack and fallen into a small campfire. Most of his clothing was burned off and there were burns on his body.
Today Dr. G.E. Kassebaum, county coroner, said Eschelman died from the bums when the fire engulfed his body.
Services for Eshelman will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Dunsford Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Corzine Cemetery in Corbin.
He was born Aug. 27, 1900 in Decatur, Iowa to David R. and Barbara Wentz Eshelman.
He married Bessie Lucy Fultz Sept. 7, 1926 in Wellington. She preceded him in death. In 1961, he married Mildred A. Hulse in El Dorado. She died in 1976.
The rural Butler County farmer leaves a son, Ted Eshelman of Augusta, and two grandsons, Darian and Devin Eshelman. Five brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.
