Paul Gilbert Jr.
Paul Gilbert Jr., 86, Whitewater, formerly of Augusta, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004.
After internment in the Pawnee Rock Cemetery, a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18, at the Augusta First United Methodist Church, 2420 N.Ohio.
He was born on Oct. 25, 1918 in Pawnee Rock the son of Paul and Della (Smith) Gilbert.
He graduated from Pawnee Rock High School and then attended Long Beach California College in 1936 and 1937
He went on to Kansas State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering in 1942.
Paul worked at Boeing from Jan. 1942 to Sept. 1945 in Wichita, except for 10 months in Seattle,Wash.
Paul attended seminary at Garrett Biblical Institute (Methodist) from October of 1945 to June 1948, earning a master of Divinity degree. During this time he taught engineering subjects part time at Northwestern University.
After a whirlwind romance, he married Loraine Lee of Meridian, Miss, on Dec. 28, 1946.
Paul was ordained into the Methodist ministry immediately after graduation and was appointed pastor of the Methodist Church in Arlington. He also served Methodist congregations in Belle Plaine, Dawson in Wichita, Hoisington,
Augusta, West Side in Wichita, and Bird City. Paul and Loraine retired in 1983, returned to Augusta and later moved to Whitewater.
He is survived by: his wife of nearly 58 years, Loraine; three children, Bob Gilbert, Gayle March, and Gari James; a daughter-in-law and son-in-law; four grandchildren; four step grandchildren; one step great-grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be given to Habitat for Humanity, Alzheimer’s Association Research, or Mount Sequoyah in Fayetteville, Ark.

Jean (Sherar) Valentine, 70, Rose Hill, former Douglass Pioneer Museum curator, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004.
Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at the Douglass Church of Christ.
Survivors include: husband, Carl; sons, Dale of Wichita, Mark of rural Douglass; daughters, Cristy McCluggage of rural Douglass, Carla Harvey of Wichita; sisters, Yvonne Hammons of Sapulpa, Okla., Beverley Upshaw of Eureka Springs, Ark.; seven grandchildren; six greatgrandchildren.
Memorial has been established with the Douglass Museum.
Hillside Funeral Home of Augusta has charge of the arrangements.
Maxine Evans
Maxine Evans, 86, homemaker, Wichita, mother and mother-in-law of Marsha and Marvin Ellington of Augusta, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30, at Resthaven Mortuary in Wichita.
Other survivors are: daughters, Michelle Ducy, Melea Evans,, of Wichita; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband, Merle W. Evans.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church and Kansas Masonic Home.
Arrangements are under the direction of Resthaven Mortuary of Wichita.
