Orbie Hicks Died Sunday
Orbie Hicks of Augusta died Sunday. His services is pending at the Dunsford Funeral Home.
Hicks was the primary operator of Hicks Service Station, 7th and State.
Hicks and his brother, Dode, grew up in Wayne County, Ky., with their parents, Bert and Mattie Hicks. The family moved to Augusta.
In 1946, Orbie and his brother began leasing the former Cities Service station. The station switched from Cities Service to Gulf Oil in 1965.
They also operated a gun club on land south of Augusta and competed in the Kansas Trap Association.

‘Pete’ Edwards Dies At 89
Elmer “Pete” Edwards, 89, Augusta, formerly of Douglass, died Friday, July 29, at Augusta Medical Complex.
His graveside service was at 10:30 this morning at the Douglass Cemetery. The Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home at Douglass was in charge of arrangements.
Edwards was born June 16, 1894 at Newkirk, Okla.
He leaves three daughters, Viola Drouillard of Augusta, Madeline Dejmal of Wichita, and Audrey Grow of Haven, nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Tela Dickerson Died In Oklahoma
Tela Jane Dickerson, 90, Oklahoma City, Okla., formerly of Augusta, died Thursday, July 28.
Her funeral service was at 2 o’clock this afternoon at the Sand Springs (Okla.) Church of God. Burial was in the Woodland Cemetery at Sand Springs.
She was born Oct. 17, 1892.
She married Bish Dickerson in 1917 in Missouri. Bish, a
Mobil Oil employee, preceded her in death in 1941.
Mrs. Dickerson was a member of the Sand Springs Church of God, Rebekah, and Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW.
Survivors include a brother, Scott Richardson of Oklahoma City; many, many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Dickerson was living with her brother at the time of her death.

Sister Dies In Wichita
Wilma J. Johnson, 62, Wichita, sister of Demoye Roland of Augusta, died Friday at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Her service was at 2 p.m. today at the Byrd-Snodgrass Funeral Home. Rev. Merle Wilson officiate and burial was at the White Chapel Memorial Gardens.
She was born April 24, 1921 in Harrison, Ark., to George and Laura Josephine Smothers.
She was a former Ward Motel manager in Wichita.
Other survivors include brothers, Fred Smothers, Lee Smothers, both of Green Forest, Ark., Bill of Harrison, Ark.; and sisters, Eileen Martin of Wichita and Imogene Keys of ElDorado.

Dean Corcoran Died July 28
Dean Corcoran of Rockmart, Ga., died Thursday, July 28.
His funeral service was Sunday afternoon.
Corcoran spent his school years in Augusta living with his sister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. A.Z. Seaman. He graduated from Augusta High Schol in 1949.
He was born Aug. 13, 1932 t Dr. and Mrs. Michael Corcoran.
Corcoran was employed by the Goodyear Rubber Co. at Rockmart.
He leaves a wife, seven children, two brothers and two sisters.

Rites Here For Howerter
Douglas Gene Howerter, 20 Wichita, died Sunday when he reportedly drove his tow truck under a parked jet at Mid-Continent Airport in Wichita and struck his head on the bottom of the fuselage.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Elmwood Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Wichita Area Vocational Technical School at the Aviation Education Center.
He was born June 24, 1963 in Wichita to Gene Dennis and Karen Kay Homing Howeter.
He was a member of the First Christian Church in Topeka and had studied Wichita Aviation Science three years.
He was employeed by Ryan Aviation.
Survivors include his parents, Gene and Susan Howerter of Topeka; his mother, Karen Kay Horning; a brother, Chris Garner of Topeka; sisters, Amy Garner and Megan Garner, both of Topeka, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Louie Howerter of Wichita, Mr. and Mrs. Will G. Price Jr., of Wichita, and Mr. and Mrs. Edwin J. Horning of Caney.

Brother Dies At Emporia
Arthur A. Burdorff; 75; Emporia, brother of W.W. “Fred” Burdorff of Augusta, died Monday at the Newman Hospital in Emporia.
A memorial service and ash interment will be later this week in Emporia.
He attended Ottawa High School and Emporia Teachers College where he played football.
He was a barber in the same shop in Emporia at Sixth and Commercial Streets.
Other survivors include his wife, Billie; a son Lee of St. Louis; a daughter, Bonnie Rockwell of Suffield, Conn., and three other brother brothers, E.W. of Alton, Ill., Vic of Topeka and Dick of Olympia, Wash.
