James ‘Verlin’ Mark

James “Verlin” Mark, 87, formerly of Augusta, died on Friday, July 15, 2005.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, at Christ Lutheran Church in Augusta.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Dunsford Funeral Home in Augusta.
Verlin was born in Augusta on Aug. 20, 1918 to Ada Delzene and Henry Milton Mark.
He grew up and graduated from Augusta High School in 1935, where he enjoyed band and developed his appreciation for music.
He was married in 1940 to Vivian Morris, he served as a medic and in fuel testing in
New Calidonia for the United States Army from 1942-45.
Verlin and Vivian were blessed with two sons, Stephen and Roger.
Verlin worked in the testing lab for Mobil Refinery for 47 years.
He became active in the Lions Club in 1964, was a member of Christ Lutheran Church where he enjoyed
playing the bells and serving his Lord.
His many interests in addition to music, included chess playing, crossword puzzles, antique cars, motorcycles, and pilot training.
Verlin married Lois O’Connor Mark on Feb. 6, 1994.
In 2001, the couple moved from Augusta to Schowalter Villa in Hesston.
Loved by his family, who describe him as a lovely man, whose kindness, wit and great sense of humor
will be missed.
His survivors include: wife, Lois; son, Roger and wife, Lee; grandchildren, Lisa Mark, Julie Mark, Jami Bostic, Ami Romoser, Jerrod Mark and Courtney Mark; six great-grandchildren; step son, Ron O’Connor and wife, Tina; stepdaughter, Jewel Frankenberry and husband, Dean; four step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Vivian; son, Steve; sisters, Leona Martin and Henrietta
Kilpatrick.
A memorial has been established with Christ Lutheran Church in Augusta and Alzheimer’s Association, Sunflower Chapter, 347 S. Laura, Wichita, 67211-1518.
Arrangements are under the direction of Dunsford Funeral Home in Augusta.


‘Gene’ Metzen

Eugene Joseph “Gene” Metzen, 77, Mayfield, grocery and locker plant owner, brother of Bernetta Berndsen of Douglass, died on Wednesday, July 20, 2005.
Rosary at 7 p.m. this evening; service at 10 a.m. Saturday, both at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Wellington.
Other survivors include: wife, Mary; son, Steve of Mayfield; daughters, Judy Ternes, Jeanie Brotherton, Joan Miller, Kristie Nedbalck, all of Wichita, Debbie Heasty of Mayfield, and Diane Serrioz of Wellington; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
Memorials to Mayfield Recreational Center and Knights of Columbus.
Day Funeral Home of Wellington has direction of the arrangements.
