Dean M. Skaer

Dean M. Skaer, 92, Augusta, retired with 31 years of service as a process supervisor with Mobil Oil Co., passed away on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005.
Memorial service will be held at 10:30a.m. on Monday, Dec. 19 at the First United Methodist in Augusta.
Dean was born on Jan. 11,1913 in Augusta, the son of Arthur and Grace (Moyle) Skaer.
He spent his entire life in Augusta except for the 11 years that he attended college and the education profession.
While in high school, he was very active in sports and many extra curricular activities. After high school he attended the University of Oklahoma and Fort Hays State, where he played varsity football and basketball. It was there that he received his bachelor of science degree in chemistry in 1935.
Dean married Georgie K. Purma on Nov. 30, 1934. They lived in Hays and Russell for seven years where he taught and coached athletic sports.
In July of 1942, he returned to Augusta with his family, where he had the opportunity to work for Socony Vacuum Oil Co. Inc. (later Mobil Oil refinery). He served the company in a number of areas during his 31 years of service. His final years before retirement in 1973, he filled the position of Process Operation Supervisor, which entailed the safe and efficient operation of all process units.
He was a former board member of the Augusta Land & Development Co., which developed „ the Augusta Park Place addition. He was past president of the Augusta Board of Education.
As a member of the Kiwanis Club, he served as president, treasurer and local representative of the Kansas Kiwanis Foundation.
For many years he served as a board director of the Augusta Historical Society and the Augusta Housing Authority.
The highlight of his service on the museum board was the complete restoration of the C.N. James cabin. He was a longtime active member of the Augusta First United Methodist Church.
His survivors include: his wife, Georgie; two sons, Dean Arthur and wife, Sharon of Little Rock, Ark., and Richard Edward and wife, Carol of Grand
Junction, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; numerous greatgrandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may go to First United Methodist Church of Augusta, Augusta Kiwanis Club, Save Our State Street (S.O.S.) program, or donor’s charity of choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of Dunsford Funeral Home of Augusta.
L.D. Lewis

L.D. Lewis, 84, Haysville, retired sales manager, World War II United States Army veteran, brother and brother-in-law of Louie and Dean Lewis of Augusta, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2005.
His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday,
Dec. 16, at the First Baptist Church in Haysville.
Visitation 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, at Smith Mortuary in Derby.
Other survivors include: wife, Jane; sons, Larry, Curtis and Steve; daughter, Marilyn Fields; brothers, Lon Lewis and Jake Lewis; sisters, Silvia Walls and Imogene McLaughlin; nine grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mattie Lewis, and a brother, Grover Lewis.
A memorial has been established with First Baptist Church Children’s Ministries, 125 S. Delos, Haysville, 67060.
Smith Mortuary of Derby has charge of the arrangements.

Vernon Lessman

Vernon K. Lessman, 83, Wichita, retired Boeing engineer, father of Kandy Patterson of Douglass, died on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005.
Graveside service was held today, Dec. 19, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Independence.
Other survivors include: wife, Georgena; son, Kenneth Lessman of Wichita; daughters, Sonya Hankins of Haysville and Janet Kay Wallace of Olathe; sisters, Marcella Balke of Independence, Nadine Niberger of Phoenix, and Delores Schmidt of Eureka Springs, Ark..; 11 grandchil-dre, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Memorials to Kansas Humane Society and Trinity Hospice.
Arrangements under the direction of Cochran Mortuary of Wichita.

Marion D. Nelson

Marion D. Nelson, 86, Rose Hill, homemaker, passed away on Friday, Dec. 16, 2005.
Funeral service was held today, Dec, 19, at Smith Mortuary in Derby.
Her survivors are: children, Ronald Dean Nelson of Udall, Dolores J. Dennett of Douglass, Lee O. Nelson of Wellington, and Donald O. Nelson of Mulvane; eight grandchildren; 17 greatgrandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established with Rose Hill Senior Center, P.O.Box 337, Rose Hill, 67133.
Smith Mortuary of Derby handled the arrangements.
