Frank Shelton Dies At Ranch
CHERRYVALE, Kan. (AP) — Frank W. Shelton, 76, the American Party candidate for president in 1980 and for governor of Kansas in 1978 and 1982, died today at his ranch home near Cherryvale.
A native of the Independence, Kan. area, Shelton was an engineer and an attorney. He was an engineer with the Ohio Department of Highways from 1933 to 1941 before joining the long lines division of the American Telephone and Telegraph Co., where he worked as an attorney and in various management positions. Following his retirement in 1967, Shelton returned to Ohio as engineer of consultant contracts on the staff of the Ohio Director of Highways.
Shelton became the first executive director of the Ohio Transportation Research Center in 1970 and was named executive director emeritus on his retirement.
He returned to Kansas and his Freedom Sentry Ranch, actively particpating in Republican politics until 1977 when he became the American Party candidate for governor. He said, the idea of running as the American Party candidate is attractive “because we now seem to have the Republican and Democratic parties and not a nickel’s difference between them.”
