Glen D. Ralston
Glen, D. Ralston, 87, Augusta, passed away Friday, Sept. 19, 2008.
Viewing from 1 - 6 p.m, Thursday, visitation with family greeting friends, 6-8 p.m., both at Dunsford-Zeiner Funeral Home, West Chapel, Augusa, Graveside service at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, in Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta. Those attending should use the Ohio St, entrance.
Glen was born in Augusta on June 26, 1921 the son of Ralph 0. and Jennie (McClure) Ralston. He grew up on the family farm working alongside his dad and older brother, Clee. While out in the fields he would watch the planes go by in the sky and he vowed that someday he would fly. After graduating from Augusta High School and El Do-
After graduating from Augusta High School and El Dorado Junior College, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1943.
As a B-29 pilot with the 677th Squadron, 444th BG, 58th Wing of the 20th Air Force, he flew 30 combat missions from positions in India,
on Tinian and China; including the “hump” 32 times. Returning to the States after the end of the war, he received a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Kansas State University. In 1948 he married Maxine Laughlin, and they shared 58 years together. His work as a professional mechanical engineer in the oil refining and chemical industries would take him to jobs in Lake Charles, La., St. Joseph, Mo., and Wichita before he retired in 1982 and returned to his roots in Augusta.
He was always a farm boy at heart, and he loved growing things whether it was in a garden behind his tent in India or taking up half of his back yard at home in later years. It wasn’t out of the ordinary to see him drive his lawn-mower down the street with the cart behind it filled with watermelons, tomatoes, or whatever he had an abundance of to give away.
Glen is preceded in death by his wife Maxine, his son Steven, and brother, Clee.
He is survived by: daughters, Susan (Tom) Jabara of BelAire and Linda (Terry) Finn of Germantown, Tenn; grandchildren, Adam Finn of
Knoxville, Tenn., Whitney Finn of Oxford, Miss., Jason (Cheryl) Jabara and great-granddaughters, Madelyn and Allison, Joshua (Sara) Jabara and great-granddaughter Jenna all of Wichita.
A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S Market, Wichita, KS 67202, and can be sent in care of the funeral home.
Susan and Linda would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all their friends and extended family at Catholic Care Center for the love, care, and kindness shown to their parents during the six years they resided there.
Arrangements by Dunsford-Zeiner Funeral Home, West Chapel, Augusta.
