Blanche “Kay” Andrews

Blanche Kathlyn “Kay” Magers Andrews, 88, Wilmington, NC, succumbed to a lengthy
illness Tuesday, April 28,2009. Kay will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 1,2009 at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel. Interment will be at 2 p.m. on May 13, 2009, in Arlington National Cemetery.
Born in Goodrich, Kan., on July 27,1921, to Ralph and Blanche Byerly Magers, Kay went on to study nursing, receiving her credentials from Susan B. Anthony Hospital in El Dorado, Kan. While growing up in Kansas, she became a member of the Wesley Methodist Church. Late in
World War II, Kay joined the Army Nurse Corps
as a Second Lieutenant assigned to the Convalescence Hospital at Camp Carson, Colo., where she met and cared for her future husband, James Lawrence Andrews of Wilmington, who had been wounded during the fighting on Luzon, Philippines. Married Nov. 19, 1945, the two embarked on a journey that lasted nearly 64 years. Through the first 25 years, Kay joined Jim as a devoted Army wife, often caring for their two sons, Jim Jr. and Mike, alone while Jim was assigned to duties overseas. Her life as an
Army wife took her around the world including tours in Germany and Japan, and posts throughout the U.S. including Hawaii, Kansas, Kentucky, Illinois, and Washington, DC. After Jim's retirement to Wilmington in 1969, Kay continued to work as a Registered Nurse at New Hanover Memorial Hospital and as a private duty nurse.
Kay is survived by: her husband, Colonel James L. Andrews (USA - Retired); her two sons and their spouses, James L. Andrews, Jr. and Jorie of Bronxville, NY and Michael K. Andrews and Katrina of Huntingtown, Md.
Kay often spoke of how much she missed seeing her surviving sister, Madeline Magers Boucher of Augusta, and Mady's family of Bob and Kathy. Though a long way from her roots in Kansas, Jim's sisters in Wilmington, Joyce, Helen, Bessie, and Jeannine, and nieces Brenda and Cheryl, welcomed her warmly as one of their own.
Kay has four surviving grandchildren, James Manning Andrews of Atlanta, Amelia Kate Andrews Abbott of Charlotte, Emma Katherine Andrews and Holly Christine Andrews of Huntingtown,
Md. She was most fortunate to be able to enjoy the newest member of the Andrews clan, her greatgrandchild, Wilson Sparks Abbott, son of her granddaughter Amelia and Chip.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations sent to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington.
Condolences may be sent to www.andrewsmor-tuary.com.
