Donald Ray Hammerli
The Rev. Donald R. Hammerli, 86, Salina, died after a long illness on July 23,2009, at Presbyterian Manor, Salina.
A family interment will be on Friday, July 31, at the Greenwood Cemetery in Clay Center, with a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1, at
Sunrise Presbyterian Church in Salina.
He was born at Broughton, Kan. on March 24, 1923 to Ray Bowman Hammerli and Alice Estelle (Biehl) Hammerli.
He graduated from Clay County Community High School in 1940, Kansas State University in 1948, and McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago in 1951.
He married Maxine Louise Ruhr on April 15, 1945 while on furlough from the United States Army.
During World War II, Don joined the Office of Strategic Service and served in England and Italy.
He was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corp.
Don served a variety of pastorates in Presbyterian churches; Oakland, ILL., Phillipsburg, Topeka Highland Park, Holton, Hoxie, Roxbury, and Salina Sunrise, all in Kansas.
He was Presbytery Executive and Stated Clerk of Northern Kansas, Interim Presbytery Executive of Southern Kansas, as well as State Clerk of the Synod of Kansas.
He was a member of Rotary International for 50 years, was twice honored as a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow and most recently recognized by the Salina Noon Rotary Club.
He is survived by: his wife; children, Cheryl (Barry) Brady of Kansas City, Mo., Alan (Helen) Hammerli of Ramona, Okla.,
Janet (Stan) Stowell of Augusta, and Barbara Hammerli of Manhattan, Kan.;
grandchildren, Chad Hammerli, Drew Brady, Jeffrey Stowell, Angela (David) Swan, Laura Brady, Julie (Kevin) Turpin; great-grandchildren, Samantha and Jacob Swan, Annie, Chloe and Dalton Turoin.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests gifts to one of the churches Don served, Hospice of Salina, or the charity of the donor’s choice.
