LaWanda C. Bush, 86, of Douglass, retired Mobil Oil Corporation, BSN, registered nurse, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009.
Service was held this morning at the Douglass United Methodist Church. Interment followed at Douglass Cemetery.
She leaves to mourn her passing: her husband, Frank “Sanky” H. Bush; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth “Ruthie” E. and Steven M. Dunn; son, Frank Haver Bush II.
LaWanda was preceded in death by her sister, Eve-lyne June Bush, brother, Howard (Dick) Clements, and parents, Elma and Tom Clements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Douglass United Methodist Church and the Douglass Senior Center, 124 W 4th St.,Douglass, KS 67039.

Ralph Edward "Red" Stalnaker, 86, Augusta, passed away Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009.
Viewing 1-6 p.m. today and j service at 10 a.m. on Wednesday,

Funeral Chapel, Augusta. Burial will follow at Latham Cemetery.
Ralph was born in Won-sevu, Kan. on June 9, 1923, the son of the late Augustus and Florence Amanda (Aikens) Stalnaker. He retired as a supervisor for Butler County Highway Department and was a farmer. On July 2, 1949, he married Orphia Totman. She survives.
He is also survived by: daughter, Shirley Pilant and husband Jesse of Au-
son, Bailey Burden.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Bill, Alva and Jack; sisters, Mary Ellen and Dorothy.
Memorials to the Disabled American Veterans or Alzheimers Association.

Jamie Ward Sailer, 90, of Augusta, passed away Saturday, Nov. 7 2009.

Jamie was born near Haverhill, Kan. on March 10, 1919; the son of the late August Gilbert and Grace Ethelyn (Ward) Sailer. He retired as a welder and inspector from Cessna. On Dec. 19, 1942 he married Lotus (Eckert) in Augusta and she survives.
He is also survived by: sons, Norman Sailer and wife Chrystal of Wichita, and Steve Sailer of El Dorado; brother, John Sailer of Augusta; sister, Rosemary Taylor of Augusta; 5 grandchildren; 1 step grandchild; 4 great grandchildren; and 3 step great grandchildren.
Memorials to the Joppa Masonic Lodge AF & AM # 223 Leon.

David Lee Shirk
David Lee Shirk, 93, rural Lawrence, died on Monday, Nov. 2, 2009.
A private graveside ceremony for the family was held Nov. 4 at Memorial Park Cemetery.
A celebration of life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, 20,09 in the Kansas Room of the University of Kansas Student Union.
He was born Nov. 14, 1915, in Salina, the son of Elijah Hix and Vista Ora Cochran Shirk.
He grew up in El Dorado, and received his primary and secondary education there.
He enrolled at the University of Kansas in 1935, after being recruited to play football. He earned football letters in 1936, 1937, and 1938, and was team captain in 1938.
He was All Big Six for two years and All American Check List for one year.
He was drafted in 1939 by the Steelers, but felt his future lay in teaching and not in professional football.
He also participated in track and wrestling at KU. Dr. James Naismith said, “David was a noted athlete, a splendid gentleman, and a true friend.” Dr. Forrest C. “Phog” Allen wrote of David, “He is not only a man of exemplary habits, but he is a leader.”
He earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees at KU. He and his wife Margaret have held KU basketball and football tickets since 1940.
He was a member of the K Club, and a life member of the University of Kansas Alumni Association, and a 70-year member of the Gamma Omicron Chapter of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
His coaching career included KU, Haskell, Augusta, Abilene, and Seaman of Topeka, coaching football, basketball, track, and golf.
He also taught physical education, health, and driver’s education, and was an administrator. He won the Kansas State Basketball Championship title while in Augusta.
Mr. Shirk served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1947, and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a longtime area farmer.
He married Margaret Lewis, whom he met at KU, and shared 69 years of marriage. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Nancy Yonally and husband Jim, Overland Park and Sally Walquist, Lawrence; three grandchildren, Mark Yonally, Lori Houk, and Todd Walquist; and two great-grandsons, Coleman and Chase Houk.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, David John Yonally, and a son-in-law, John Walquist.

Wayne Howard
Wayne Howard, age 86, of Garfield, Ark., died Oct. 31,2009.
A memorial service was held yesterday at Whitney Mountain Chapel.
He worked with the Gas Service Company in Augusta and El Dorado.
He served his country in the United States Army Strategic Air Command.
Survivors include: his wife, Jan Howard; son, Dr. Michael Howard and wife Dr. Valerie Carter; daughter, Katherine Boggs and husband John; stepdaughter, Kelly Strange and husband David; step-
son, Kipp Baker; three grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; 11 greatgrandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials should be made to the Garfield Volunteer Fire Department, P.0 Box 205, Garfield, AR 72732.
