Eileen Lewis, 96, Augusta, passed away on Friday, Aug. 20, 2010, at LakePoint Nursing Center in Augusta.
Service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 25,2010, at the Augusta First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta.
Eileen was born on Sept. 25, 1913 in Lincoln, Kan., the daughter of the late George William and Sarah Belle (Weaver) Henry. On Nov. 4, 1933 she married Breck Lewis in North Topeka, Kan. and he preceded her in death. Together with her husband, they owned and operated Breck’s Photography Studio in the 1950s through the 1970s. She was also preceded in death by a son, Jimmie Lewis and a daughter, Janet Gardner; two brothers and four sisters.
She is survived by: son, Bill Lewis and wife Lee of Everett, Wash.; son-in-law, Bill Gardner and wife Pattie of Garfield, Ark.; grandchildren,
Mark Lewis of Andover, Brian Lewis and wife Tammy of Wichita, Tonie Apel and husband Mike of Augusta, Doug Sharp and wife Sharon of Everett, Wash., Shelly Marbut and husband Ray of Augusta, Tracy Edwards of Garfield, Ark., and Gregg Lewis and wife Loresa of El Dorado; 12 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Eileen had been a member of the First Baptist Church of Augusta since moving here in the 1950s. She participated in the choir, did many mission projects at the church, and taught Sunday School to a variety of ages for many years. She was a member of Eastern Star, the Outlook Club, Good Sam’s Traveling Club and a variety of photography groups throughout her life.
After going through three major floods in ther time in Augusta, she packed up and moved to Beaver Lake after the flood of 1999, to be near her daughter. She lived in Arkansas on the lake until the last few years of her life, when she returned to Augusta.
Eileen enjoyed quilt making, gardening, knitting, sewing, photography and traveling. She enjoyed being with family and friends and spending time with her beloved pet, Peanut. She wrote a short story of her life, entitled, "Cleaning the Attic,” which summed up her years of growing up, her married life, and her love of her family. Her faith and strong Christian values helped her get through many obstacles in her life and be the wonderful mother, grandmother, wife, and sister that she was.
