Gladys Bedigrew

Gladys May (Laramore) Bedigrew, 88, retired nurse, formerly of Augusta, passed away Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, at Manor Care in Wichita.
A family service will be held at a later date.
Gladys was born Jan. 29,1922, in Hunter, Mo., the daughter of William and Nellie lone (Walter) Laramore. She marred Cecil Eugene Bedigrew on Aug. 2,1942, in Pratt. He preceded her in death on May 5,1982.
Survivors include: her son, Cecil "Bud" Bedigrew Jr. and wife Marcia of Keister, Minn.; daughters, Cecilia (Bedigrew) Huddleston and husband Randy of Augusta, and Debra (Bedigrew) Car-riker and husband Lloyd of Ada, Kan.; brother, William "Bill" Laramore of Peabody; sister, Shirley Shumate of Erie, Kan.; 8 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
In addition to her spouse, Gladys was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Smith Gentry Laramore, Harold Laramore; and a sister, Marie Wick.
Gladys loved to read, quilt, enjoyed crafts, music and traveling. She spent many years in New Mexico and loved the mountains.
A memorial has been established with the Augusta Public Library, 1609 State Street, Augusta, Kansas 67010, or in care of Dunsford-Zeiner Funeral Home, Augusta.

Dr. Elaine Smokewood

Dr. Elaine Smokewood of Augusta, formerly of Oklahoma City and Weir, Kan., passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 11,2011, at her home, surrounded by her family.
Graveside services were held on Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, at the Lone Elm Cemetery in Cherokee County with Rev. James Shoppe officiating.
She was born April 27, 1955, in Pittsburg, Kan. She attended Weir Elementary School and graduated from Southeast High School in 1973. Dr. Smokewood received her undergraduate degree from Pittsburg State University in 1977, and her Masters in English degree from Kansas University. She taught at Campus High School in Haysville, before earning her doctorate degree from the University of Arkansas. After teaching at Columbia College in Columbia, Mo., Dr. Smokewood accepted a position at Oklahoma City University in 1996, where she taught until 2010. Dr. Smokewood taught the last year and a half there using web cam technology from her home in Augusta, as her voice and mobility were stolen by ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
She taught various English classes through OKCU, including poetry, to her students. In 2010, she was honored as the Teacher of the Year at OKCU.
Dr. Smokewood is survived by: her parents, Darrell and Margaret Smokewood, of the home; her twin sister, Cathleen Stahmer, brother-in-law Ken Stahmer, and niece Sarah Stahmer, all of Augusta. Also surviving are her beloved rescued dogs, Blake and Natasha.
Dr. Smokewood was a talented poet and teacher who was highly respected and admired by her teaching colleagues and students alike. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Arrangements and services were under the direction of Bath-Naylor Funeral Home of Weir, Kan.

James David ‘Dave’ Fox

James David "Dave" Fox, 57, welder and musician, Augusta, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 22,2011.
Memorial to be held at a later date.
Dave was born on July 10,1953, in Wichita to James and Sadie (Chatham) Fox. On Sept. 30,2000, he married Connie Walker in Houston, TX.
Survivors include: his wife, Connie; mother, Sadie; son, Heath Wallace; stepson, Jeremy Black; siblings, Linda Dunn and Carol Rowley.
He was preceded in death by his dad, James, and brother, Maurice.
