MORRIS MOON
. . .answered legal questions
City Attorney Moon Dies, Rites Monday
Jesse Morris Moon Jr., 63, city attorney here for nearly 20 years, died early this morning at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.
His funeral will be at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon at the Dunsford Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Burl Allison Jr. officiating and burial in Elmwood Cemetery.
Memorials to Augusta Medical Complex and the Augusta Public Library have been suggested by the family.
Moon and Bob Munroe worked together on a lawsuit involving the city in district court at El Dorado yesterday. “Morris hadn’t been feeling well, but I thought he was in good spirits after court yesterday,” Munroe said this morning.
Moon and his wife, Shirley, attended a pre-grand opening reception at the new Eureka Federal Savings and Loan office on West Seventy yesterday evening.
Later, he reportedly complained of back pains and sought treatment at Augusta Medical Complex. Moon was eventually transferred to St. Francis in Wichita.
Thursday, April 15, 1982
Moon, who was born in Wichita Nov. 15, 1918 to Jesse Morris and Edna Clarke Moon, graduated from the University of Kansas Law School in 1948. After graduation, he worked as assistant county attorney under 0. J. Connell of El Dorado.
He later ran against Page Benson for the county attorney position and won it by three votes, according to friends here. He also won election to a second term in the early 1950s.
Moon became city attorney for Augusta in October of 1962 succeeding his friend, Munroe, who had held the post 10 years prior to that.
“We always enjoyed each other,” Munroe said today while noting Moon’s death was a shock for him as well as others in this community.
During his lifetime, Moon also served as city attorney for Douglass and as attorney for Augusta Unified School District 402.
He held memberships in the Butler County Bar Association, the Kansas Bar Association, the American Bar Association, Augusta Elks Lodge, American Legion and Masonic Lodge.
Moon, who once served with the U.S. Coast Guard, was a director of Prairie State Bank, chairman of the Title Standards Committee of the state bar association, president of the Butler County Community College Endowment Committee, a past president of the City Attorneys’ Association, a trustee of the Flossie E. West Memorial, a trustee of the Golda Fowler Scholarship Fund and a past president of the Augusta Rotary Club.
He married the former Shirley Johnson at Abilene on Dec. 20, 1941. She survives.
Moon also leaves four sons, Jesse M. Moon III of Tucson, Ariz., Robert Moon of Lander, Wyo., David Moon of Bozeman, Mont., and Richard Moon of Lawrence; a daughter, Marilyn Gomery of Chevy Chase, Md., and two grandchildren, Andrew and Christopher Moon of Tucson.
