Body of AHS grad found
MIKE R. POTTS . . .funeral tomorrow
The body of a 1986 graduate of Augusta High School was found yesterday near Beech Aircraft Corp. property on the east side of Wichita. The deceased has been identified as Michael Potts.
According to authorities, the 18-year-old Potts was reported as missing on Oct. 20.
Detective sergeant John Daily with the Sedgwick County Sheriff's department said Potts’ death has been ruled a suicide. A small-caliber handgun was found near the decomposed body which was discovered by employees of a tree-trimming company about a half-mile east of Webb Road and a quarter-mile north of Kellogg.
Potts apparently had died about the time he was reported missing.
Sergeant Daily said the time of death would be consistent with the missing person report.
In the coronor’s estimate, the type of wound, the area of the wound is consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Daily said, explaining that the department is basically finished with its investigation.
Potts played on the AHS Oriole football and basketball teams three years. He was a football co-captain his senior year.
Graveside services will be at 3 o’clock tomorrow afternoon in the Elmwood Cemetery here.
Potts lettered in football and basketball all three years at AHS, according to athletic director Armand Hillier.
Linda Williams, a family friend, said football was Potts’ first love and one of his biggest thrills was when the Orioles won district in 1985.
Gail MacKenzie, AHS counselor, reports Potts was a good student and was well liked by his peers.
A memorial fund is being established at Prairie State Bank and Citadel Bank of Augusta.
He was born Nov. 6,1967 in Winfield to Fred E. and Joyce Larcom Potts.
He had worked at Scholfield’s Body Shop in Wichita.
Survivors include brothers, David of Wichita and Eugene of Augusta; sister, Elaine Heit of Augusta; father, Fred E. Potts of Wichita; mother, Joyce E. Potts of Loveland, Colo., and grandparents, Floyd and Vada Potts of Douglass.
