Leon G. Churning dies at his home
Retired laborer Leon C. Churning, 75, Iola, father of Wilma Edwards of Douglass, died April 7 at his home. His funeral service was Saturday afternoon at the Waugh-Yokum Funeral Home chapel in Iola and burial was in the Highland Cemetery. Elder Leon Morrow of the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints officiated.
He was born Nov. 6, 1912 in Holyoke, Colo., to William and Mary Haining Churning.
He and Mary Riley were married in 1936. She survives.
In addition to his wife and daughter, he leaves sons, Larry of Gas, Allen of San Diego, Calif., Michael of Chanute, and Carl of Iola; another daughter, Mary Ann Brittain of Rock; brothers, Theodore of Pennsylvania and Leonard of Missouri; a sister, Thelma Heath of Wichita; 24 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.
Pearl J. Holmes dies at Newton
Homemaker Pearl J. Holmes, 68, Newton, sister of Hazel Dalke of Augusta, died April 6 at the Newton Medical Center. Her funeral was this afternoon at the Peterson Funeral Home in Newton with Rev. Alden Dick officiating and burial in the Greenwood Cemetery.
She was born June 11, 1919 in Newton to Orville and Lola Sharits.
She was married March 17, 1937 in Newton to Donald Holmes. He survives.
Mrs. Holmes was a member of Eastern Star.
In addition to her sister and husband, she is survived by daughters, Donna Stricklan of Phoenix, Ariz., Rae Ann Anderson and Geraldine Slack, both of Newton, Loretta Ness of Lafayette, Colo., and Kathryn Beal of Mesquite, Texas; a brother, James Sharits of Phoenix; another sister, Edna Oberg of Wellington; 14 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
Memorials to the American Heart Association have been suggested.
William G. Schaul died on April 6
Retired farmer/rancher William G. “Bill” Schaul, 75, Haviland, father of Gary D. Schaul of Douglass, died April 6 at St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. A graveside service was held Saturday afternoon, April 9, at the Haviland Cemetery. Rev. Lawrence Lambert officiated.
He was born Jan. 17, 1913 in Conway, Mo.
Mr. Schaul was married Feb. 13, 1937 in Enid, Okla.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge 409.
Survivors include his wife, LaRue; another son, William L. of Dallas, Texas; a brother, Kenneth of
Alhambra, Calif.; four grandchildren, and one great-granchild.
Memorials to the Haviland United Methodist Church and the Haviland Masonic Lodge have been suggested.
The Ayres-Calbeck Funeral Home of Pratt was in charge of arrangements.

Ethel Strickland funeral tomorrow
A funeral service for Ethel C. Strickland, 79, El Dorado, sister of Edna McGregor and Eunice Bevan, both of Leon, will be 10 o’clock tomorrow morning, April 13, at the Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado. Burial will be in the Maude Cemetery at Cunningham tomorrow afternoon.
Strickland, a homemaker, died Sunday, April 10.
Other survivors include sons Thomas of Wichita and Jerry of Derby; brothers, Amos Hackler opf El Dorado and Brice Hackler of Andover; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials to the First Southern Baptist Church and the American Cancer Society have been suggested.

Vernie Rymph died on Monday
Retired payroll clerk Vernie Rymph, 76, Harper, mother of Mary Lou Shaft of Douglass died Monday, April 11.
Her funeral will be 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon at the United Methodist Church in Harper. The Elliot Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Rymph also leaves her husband, Delmar; one grandchild and one step-grandchild.
A memorial has been established with the United Methodist Church.

Nellie Klingman has nieces here
Rev. Nellie Klingman, 95, Wichita, aunt of Barbara Brown, Wilda Miller, and FloEllen Simon, all of Augusta, died April 10 at the Homestead nursing home.
Her funeral service was April 13 at the Hyde Park United Methodist Church in Wichita and burial was in the White Chapoel Memorial Gardens.
Rev. Klingman was born Aug. 14, 1892 near Defiance, Iowa, as a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Sheets.
She started teaching in school at age 17.
She married David L. Klingman Nov. 30. 1913 at Coming. He preceded her in death.
They attended seminary in Dayton, Ohio. She became a licensed minister in 1927 and was ordained by the United Brethern in Christ Church in 1939.
In addition to the nieces here, she leaves three children, one sister, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
The DeVorss Flanagan-Hunt Mortuary of Wichita was in charge of arrangements.
