Chester Petersen

Augusta native Chester Earl Petersen, 76, of Grosse Pointe '
Woods, Mich., and formerly of Augusta, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997, in Detroit, Mich.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at Kirby- Morris Funeral Home in El Dorado. Graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1
at Sunset Lawns Cemetery in ElDorado.
Chester Earl Petersen was born July 24, 1921, in Augusta to R.E. and Linda (Kenyon) Petersen.
He drove an ambulance for Amold-Kirby Funeral Home in El Dorado in 1940 and 1941.
He married Roberta J. Daniels Nov. 23, 1941, in El Dorado.
He served during World War II in the U.S.Navy from 1941 until 1945 where he attained the rank of petty officer third class. Chester graduated from El Dorado Junior College, Pittsburg State Teacher’s College and the University of Kansas.
He was a building inspector and assistant city manager in Hutchinson. In 1954, he was appointed by Dwight D. Eisenhower to serve on a committee which wrote national building codes.
He served as Newton city manager from 1956 until 1959 and was city manager in Greenville, Texas, from 1959 until 1961. He was appointed city administrator of Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich., in 1961 and retired in 1992 as city administrator emeritus.
Also during his career, he was appointed by presidents Eisenhower, Lyndon B. Johnson and George Bush as Special Ambassador of the U.S. State Department to encourage U.S.-European relationships with local and national government officials.
Survivors are wife, Roberta Petersen of the home; son, Ronald Petersen of Chicago, ILL and grandchildren Robin Elizabeth and Michael Aaron Peterson.

Vera W. Buckbee

Vera Winifred Buckbee, 86, of Augusta, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 1997.
Visitation will be from 1 until 8 p.m. at Dunsford Funeral Home. Her funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Dunsford Chapel Graveside service will
1997, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center in Winfield.
A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
Ralph T. Stiles was born Aug. 26, 1907, in Grenola to Fred and Nora (Hobaugh) Stiles. He attended Grenola High School and began working in the oil industry.
He married Jewell U. Gulick March 20, 1940, in Houston, Mo.
He worked in Nevada, Washington and Texas before moving to Winfield and working with Deal Lumber Co. for 10 years and as a field representative for the Kansas State Department of Revenue for 10 years. He retired in 1973 and managed McCord Mobile Manor with his wife for 13 years.
He was a member of Central Baptist Church and was formerly affiliated with Winfield Elks Lodge.
Survivors are wife, Jewell “Judy” Stiles of Augusta and brother, Homer Stiles of Augusta.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Floyd, Herman, Jeff, Edward and Fred Stiles; and five sisters, Mimmie Lee, Mary Fraley, Nellie Gretken, Ruth Frey and Alice Carter.
Memorials have been established with Winfield Meals on Wheels and Grenola Historical Society. Contributions may be sent through Miles Funeral Service, P.O. Box 720, Winfield, KS. 67158.
