Theater man ‘Bob’ Bisagno dies
Arrangements pending at Dunsford Funeral Home
Retired Augusta Theatre owner-operator Robert D. “Bob” Bisagno, 74, died last night at the Lakepoint Nursing Center.
His funeral arrangements were pending this morning at the Dunsford Funeral Home of Augusta.
Mr. Bisagno was extremely proud of the unique downtown theater built here by his parents, D.A. and Aline Bisagno during the Depression Era.
The theater with its 1935 Art Deco design is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s noted for its neon lighting and interior murals.
Bisagno worked in the theater most of his life and closed it in 1985 because of dwindling attendance. He entrusted the theater to the Augusta Arts Council four years later.
He once confided that he played saxophone and and clarinet in the theater during his youth.
“It was so much fun in the old days,’ he said, “We had movies, concerts, fashion shows, dance recitals and an orchestra. We even had a church service in the theater during Dust Bowl Days.”
Bisagno continued to operate a downtown office adjacent to the theater in the 500 block of State where he showcased his collection of movie theater memorabilia.
He was also active in the Augusta Historical Society and served on the Augusta City Planning Commission. Bisagno also served as a director of a trust at Wichita State University.
He was a member of the Augusta First United Methodist Church and provided the land where the church currently sits.
