Thelma Gibson
Thelma Nadine Gibson, 86, of Augusta mother of Oleita Ray of Douglass, died Thursday, Aug. 13, 1998 in Wichita.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18 at Augusta Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses with minister Ben Ketts presiding. Interment will be in Mooreland Cemetery in Mooreland, Okla.
She was born on April 16, 1912 to Harry Kirkwood and Irma Blount in Mooreland, Okla.
Thelma married George C. Gibson on July 27, 1929 in Woodward, Okla. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include sons, Roger Gibson of Trinity, Texas, and Jerry Gibson of Peralta, New Mexico; daughter, Oleita Roy of Douglass, 10 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Hillside Funeral Home of Augusta is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
Mildred Meis
Mildred I. Meis, 66, of Augusta, died Friday, Adg- 14, 1998, at the Augusta Medical Center.
Her funeral service will be 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 18, at Carlson Funeral Home, El Dorado. Burial will follow in Walnut Valley Memorial Park.
She was born Dec. 10, 1931 at Ellis as the daughter of John G. and Ida Sablousky Huber.
Mrs. Meis was a homemaker and had made her home in Augusta since 1970, living previously in Wakeeny, Wichita and Ellis. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Wichita, where she had been a substitute organist and vocalist. She had also been active with the Girl Scouts.
On Sept. 17, 1950 she was united in marriage to Lawrence A. Meis Sr., at Ellis. He preceded her in death on Sept. 22, 1990.
Those she leaves are four sons, Lawrence A. Meis, Jr., Wichita; Andrew Meis, Augusta; James Meis, Derby, and Jack Meis, Kansas City, Mo.; three daughters, Linda
Sanders, Merritt, North Carolina, Tina McCluer, El Dorado and Geraldine “Geri" Fulk of Hugoton; one brother, Gaayert Huber of Girard; six sisters, Freda Lovett of Carthage, Mo., Viola Deutscher of Long Beach, Calif., Alma Armbrister of Ellis, Wilma
Doyle of Delton, Ga„ Darlene Suiton of Arvada, Colo., and Aioletta Holgst of Hays; 23 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, five brothers, three sisters and one granddaughter, Crystal.
Memorials to Christ Lutheran Church-Wichita or The Girl Scouts may be left at Carlson Funeral Home, El Dorado.
Alvin E. Darter
Alvin E. Darter, 85, a restaurant owner and farmer, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, in his home town of Douglass.
Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at the Hillside Funeral Home, Augusta Chapel.
Alvin Darter was born March 10, 1913 to Jessie Darter and Mabel (Wilford) Darter in Douglass.
He is survived by a brother, Don Darter of St. Maries, Idaho, and a brother, Wilford Darter of Douglass. He is also survived by one granddaughter, Jodi Schiermeister.
Memorial has been established with Douglass Senior Center, P.O. Box 362, Douglass, 67039.
Horace Douglass Bates
Horace Douglass Bates, 77, died August 6, 1998, at his home in Augusta.
Bates was born on December 5, 1920, in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of Samuel Jacob Bates and Alma Viola Douglass.
Bates married Edith Popwell, who preceeded him in death. Bates’ son Richard also preceeded him in death.
Survivors include Steven Douglass Bates of Salina and Janice Chandler of Augusta. Bates also leaves two grandchildren, Steven Spaugh and Michael Kimball, both of Augusta. Bates’ three greatgrandchildren include Stephanie and Jonathan Spaugh of Salina, and Jazmine Spaugh of Augusta.
Bates was retired from the military, and served in the army and the airforce. Bates was a member of the V.F.W.
His memorial service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, August 8, at Dunsford Chapel.
Memorials can be made to the Wichita Renal Treatment Center.
The daughters of a mother who is colorblind and a father who has normal vision will have normal vision, he sons will be colorblind, however.
