Gladys Bannon

Gladys I. Davis Bannon, 90, longtime Douglass resident, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at the Medicalodge of Douglass.
Her funeral will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Feb. 25, at Friends Church in Rose Hill. Interment will be at Rose Hill Friends Church Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service, Winfield, from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday.
She was born Oc. 12, 1909, near Ava, Mo., as one of the four children of Earnest and Olive Shaver Hamilton.
She attended Ozark Holiness Academy, Mt. Zion, Mo., and taught private piano lessons as a young woman.
In March of 1929, she was married to Ross Davis at Ava, Mo. The couple moved to Derby in 1935 where they worked in truck farming. In 1940 they moved to Rose Hill where they continued to farm and also ran a dairy. Mr. Davis preceded her in death in 1950.
On Aug. 14, 1955, she was united in marriage to Clarence Bannon at Winfield. The couple made their home in Douglass throughout their marriage.
Mrs. Bannon was a cook at the Rose Hill School for 27 years, retiring at 72. Mr. Bannon preceded her in death on June 26, 1983.
In November, 1995, Mrs. Bannon moved into the Medicalodge of Douglass.
Mrs. Bannon was a member of the Friends Church Rose Hill. Her hobbies included crocheting and gardening.
In addition to her two husbands, Mrs. Bannon was preceded in death by a son Lawrence in 1992, her grandson Kevin Hinshaw; two brothers, Earnest and Mark Hamilton, and her sister, Iris Murray.
She is survived by her son Don Davis, Atlanta, and two daughters, Viola I. Nelson, Chula Vista, Calif., and Cordelia Hinshaw, Rose Hill. In addition, she is survived by 11 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren.
Memorials have been established in Mrs. Bannon’s name with Friends Church of Rose Hill and with the Friends Disaster Service Fund. Contributions may be made through the church or the funeral home.
The Miles Funeral Service, Winfield, is in charge of arrangements.

‘Sully’ Sullivan

Earl Wayne “Sully” Sullivan, 77, Douglass, died Monday. Feb. 21, 2000.
His funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church here. A rosary will be said at 7 o’clock this evening at the church.
He was born Aug. 25, 1922 in Caney as the son of Willis Earl and Mary Hazel (McClure) Sullivan.
He married Marietta Neu-worth on May 10, 1946 in Wichita.
Mr. Sullivan was a retired production planner for Beech Aircraft Corporation and a farmer.
In addtion to his wife, he leaves sons, Michael Sullivan of Rose Hill and Barry Sullivan of Benton; daughters, Linda Nelson of Norwalk, Calif., and Kathleen Ellis of San Diego, Calif.; brothers, Marvin Sullivan and Robvert Sullivan, both of Cold Springs, Texas, and Doyle of Peru; eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established in his name and memory with the St. James Catholic Church building fund.
The Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home of Douglass is in charge of arrangements.

‘Curly’ Davis

W.A. “Curly” Davis, 80, Augusta, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000 at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital in El Dorado after a brief illness.
His funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 2, at the Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado. Burial will follow in Towanda Cemetery.
He was born Oct. 10, 1919 in Mulberry as the son of Henry J. and Jessie (Thomas) Davis. He came to this area as a child. During World War II, he served with the 833rd Aviation Engineers Battalion, U.S. Army Air Corps.
After 41 years as a field gauger, he retired rom Pester Refinery in 1982.
On Aug. 10, 1944, he was married to Mary Ann Mallow in Dearborn, Mich. She survives.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Davis leaves daughters, Margie Herron of El Dorado and Nancy Boeselager of Lisle, Ill.; son, David A. Davis of Wichita; five grandchildren, Greg Hedrick, Becky Hedrick, Michelle Johnston, Kelle Kelly, and Andy Davis; one great grandson, Zachary Kelly; two brothers, Elmer Davis of El Dorado and Donald W. Davis of Houston, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and one brother.
Mr. Davis was a past commander of the American Legion Capt. Edgar Dale Post 81; SPEBSQSA, Natural Statesmen of Rogers, Ark. and the First United Methodist Church of Augusta where he sang in the choir.
Memorials to the Augusta Public Library have been suggested.
