Pat Thirsk

Pansy “Pat” Thirsk, 92, of Augusta, died Thursday, June 1, 2000 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Her funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 5, at the First Christian Church, 1600 State. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be Sunday, June 4, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Dunsford Funeral Home of Augusta.
She was born on Oct. 29, 1907 in Winfield to Benjamin and Olla (Biddle) Bonswell.
She was employed by the Augusta Daily Gazette in the collection department.
Pat married James Lester Thirsk on Jan. 27, 1929 in Winfield. He preceded her in death in 1974.
Pat is survived by son and spouse, Larry and Jackie Thirsk of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter and spouse, Shirley Berner and husband, Homer; sisters, Roseland Gaskill of Augusta and Violet Hartman of
Reddings, Calif.; four grandchildren, Kay Trotta of DeQueen,
Ark., Gail Harcrow of New Braunfels, Texas, Kevin Thirsk of Walla Walla, Wash, and Heather Newby of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-greatgrandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, Augusta.

Evelyn Carr

Former Augustan Evelyn M. Carr, 66, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000.
Her graveside service was held June 2 at the Rosario Cemetery.
She was born July 12, 1933 in Ransom to John and Martha Kraft.
Mrs. Carr was a resident of Los Alamos, N.M., for 35 years and worked for the transportation department of Los Alamos Schools for 30 years before her retirement.
She enjoyed spending time with her two granddaughters as
well as working in her flower garden and caring for her yard. She also loved playing bingo and slot machines.
“Evelyn was the pillar of strength that built our loving and successful family. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother,” the family said.
She and her husband Dick had been married 46 years at the time of her death.
Mrs. Carr leaves a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Daniela Carr and their daughters Micaela and Kailey Carr, all of Santa Fe, N.M.; sister Karen Emberson of Augusta; mother-in-law Jeanette Carr and brother-in-law, Stephen Carr, both of Augusta.

Joe A. Mahannah

Joseph Alan Mahannah, 84, Augusta, died Wednesday, June 21, 2000 at Augusta Medical Complex.
His funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 24, at the Augusta First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
He was born July 22, 1915 to Gertrude and J.E. Mahannah in Wichita.
He graduated from Augusta High School in 1933 and attended the University of Kansas for two years.
Joe started working at Mobil Oil after school and summers, first in the laboratory, then through several departments. He retired as a supervisor in 1975.
In 1937, he married Jewell Powers and they celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in September.
Mr. Mahannah spent time in the Navy Seebees, serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He spent a year and a half in Iran on assignment with Mobil Oil (1960-61).
After retiring, Joe and Jewell bought a small house in Raymond, Colo., where they spent 23 summers hiking mountain trails and were joined by family members on vacation. In his younger days, he carried many tired little hikers on his back -first his children and then some grandchildren.
Joe was a member of the Augusta First Methodist Church.
His hobbies were hiking, reading, cards, woodworking, and travel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gertrude and J.E. Mahannah; his step-mother, Flossie Mahannah; two brothers, Martin Mahannah (a Marine pilot) and Lynn Mahannah (an Army pilot) who were killed in World War II, and son-in-law Frank Moskus.
Mr. Mahannah leaves his wife Jewell; son Marlin Mahannah; daughters Rhonda Duvanel and Janice Moskus; eight grandchildren, Troy and Nicole Duvanel, Joe Moskus, Joshua, Daniel, Megan, D.J., and Jesse Mahannah; son-in-law Henry Duvanel and daughter-in-law Colleen Mahannah, and great-grandchild Evan Duvanel.
Memorials to the church building fund, Augusta Library, or Trinity Hospice have been suggested.
The Dunford Funeral Home of Augusta is in charge of arrangements.
