Rex Lakin

Rex Lakin, 67, retired Boeing Wichita purchasing lead of Grenola and brother of Ronald
Lakin of Augusta, died Saturday, April 28, 2001.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, at Grenola United Methodist Church.
Mr. Lakin is survived by wife, Shirley; sons, Brent of Wichita, Brian of Tulsa; daughter, Toni Lakin of Wichita; father, Elvin of Fall River; brothers, LeRoy, Richard, both of El Dorado, William of Beaumont, Ronald of Augusta; four grandchildren.
Memorials have been established with Grenola Public Library and Youth Recreation Area.
Watson Funeral Home in Wichita is in charge of arrangements.

Monica L. Baum

Monica L. Evans Chastain Baum, 26, certified nurse’s aide of El Dorado and sister of Crystal Evans of Douglass, died Thursday, April 26, 2001.
Her funeral service was held today, April 30, at Kirby-Morris Funeral Home in El Dorado.
Mrs. Baum is survived by husband, Alex; son, Anthony; daughter, Hayley Baum all of El Dorado; father, James Evans; mother, Mary Evans both of Wichita; sister, Crystal Evans of Douglass; grandparents, Mike and Shirley Zenner of Benton.

‘Kay’ Kirtley

Kathleen “Kay” C. (Wright) Kirtley, 77, homemaker of Howard and sister of Dean Lewis of Augusta, died Friday, April 27, 2001.
Her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, at Bud Fields Cemetery in Dodge City.
Mrs. Kirtley is survived by son,Joe Potter of Choctaw, Okla.; daughters, Linda Kay Chapman of Howard, Janet McDonald of Elk Falls; sister, Dean Lewis of Augusta; six
great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established with Flint Hills Assembly of God. Zimmerman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William Shaffer

William H. Shaffer, Jr., 77, farmer and retired Union Tank Car employee of Leon, died Friday, April 27, 2001.
His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 1, at Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado. Interment will follow in Walnut Valley Memorial Park.
Mr. Shaffer was born on December 10, 1923 to William H. and Sophie (Speckman) Shaffer in Latham. He served in the Navy in the South Pacific during World Wa II He married Betty Jo Edwards on April 10, 1948, in Augusta.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Max; and sister, Lola Wilcox.
Mr. Shaffer is survived by wife, Betty; son, Lyle of El Dorado; daughter, Jolene Woodard of Leon; sister, Louise McMinn of Santa Rosa, Calif.; eight grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren.
A memorial has been established with the Butler County 4-H Fair Association.

James E. Cyphers

James E. “Jim” Cyphers, 76, retired Mobil Oil Refinery employee of Augusta, died Sunday, April 29, 2001.
His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, at First Christian Church.
Visitation will be possible from 1 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 1, at Dunsford Funeral Home of Augusta.
Mr. Cyphers was born Aug. 24, 1924 in Augusta to Elmer E. and Grace L. (Harper) Cyphers.
He married Virginia N. Dennett in El Dorado on June 5, 1943.
He was a World War II combat infantry veteran from 1943 to 1945 serving in the European Theatre. He received a purple heart and bronze star for his service.
Mr. Cyphers was a lifetime member of the DAV and a longtime member of the First Christian Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Mike Cyphers; and sister, Violet Dobbins.
Mr. Cyphers is survived by wife, Virginia; son, James W. of Augusta; daughter, Terri L. Marshall of Newton; brothers, Paul of Augusta, Dean of Fort Worth, Bob of Tucson; sister Doris Mehl of Pueblo, Colo.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Dunsford Funeral Home of Augusta is in charge of arrange-ments.
