Mildred Ballinger
Mildred (Millie) L. Ballinger, 92, of Augusta, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002 at Augusta Regional Medical Complex.
Her service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 11, at Hillside Funeral Home in
Augusta.
Visitation will be 8 a.m.-8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, and 1-6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10, also -at Hillside Funeral Home.
Augusta’s lovable matriach of the restaurant and catering business leaves behind her son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Haroldine Ballinger; grandaugh-ter and grandson-in-law, Holly and Dale Harper; two greatgrandchildren, Blythe and Kale Harper; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Eleanor Reed of Santa Anna, Calif.
Mrs. Ballinger was preceded in death by husband, Art; grandsons, Cory and Michael Ballinger.
She was a member of the Christian Church.
Mrs. Ballinger was co-owner of Ballinger’s Catering. The family business evolved from a 1940’s hamburger stand called the Green Spot, located on State Street.
In 1982, Jack Taylor, owner of Lehr’s Restaurant submitted Mrs. Ballinger’s name as a nominee for the Kansas Restaurant Hall of Fame. It was the highlight of her life to be inducted.
Mrs. Ballinger and her catering staff were quite proud to have served notable public figures including, Vincent Price, Henry Winkler, Bob Dole, Ed McMahon, Frank Sinatra, Barbara Mandrell, and President Gerald Ford.
In 1992, it was an honor for the Ballingers to be able to serve Russian President Boris Yeltsin
when he visited Kansas.
Many Augustans have fond memories of working with Mrs. Ballinger. She will be missed by her friends and family.
Betty L. Dennett
Betty (Phillips) Dennett, 79 of Augusta, died Feb. 13, 2002.
Services at 11 a.m., tomorrow, Feb. 16, at Faith Baptist Church in Andover.
Survivors: sons, David Dennett of Augusta, Gene Dennett and wife, Carol of Augusta, Gary Dennett and wife, Jean of Conway Springs; daughter, Marilyn and husband, Terry Franks of Mesquite, Nev; brother, Bob Phillips of Hillsboro, brother, Kenneth, and wife, Pat Phillips of El Dorado; sister, Beverly LeFever of El Dorado, sister Lucille and husband Richard Wyss, of Florence, sister, Dorothy and husband, Roy Koehn of Newton; brother-in-law, Harry Harms of Hosington.
Memorials with Faith Baptist Church of Andover, Andover Senior Center, and American Legion.
Dunsford Funeral Home of Augsuta is in charge of the arrangements.
Wilda E. Christopher
Wilda E. Christopher, 90, of Augusta, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002.
She was a cook for Lehr’s Restaurant for 20 years. Mrs. Christopher owned and operated the Highway Grocery and the A&W Root Beer drive-in on U.S. 54 Highway during her lifetime.
Her visitation was from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at the Dunsford Funeral Home Chapel.
Her funeral service was held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, in the Church of the Nazarene in Augusta.
Mrs. Christopher was preceded in death by two husbands; Frank Griffith and Walter Christopher; daughter, Beth Perkins; grandson, Curtis Griffith; two great-grandchildren, Ty and Rebecca Lewis.
She leaves sons Curtis Griffith of Augusta and Earl Griffith of Wichita; brothers Bill Brown of Kingman, Kan., and Ed Brown of Kingman, Ariz.; sisters Ruth Wood of Mountain Home, Ark. and Betty Gleckler of Florida; 18 grandchildren including grandson Jay Lewis of Augusta, 34 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials with Lakepoint Nursing Center, 901 Lakepoint Drive. Augusta, Kan. 67010 have been suggested by the family.
The Dunsford Funeral Home of Augusta was in charge of arrangements.
