Florence Zerbe
Florence Zerbe, 92, mother of Augusta Daily Gazette publisher Carter J. Zerbe, died today, Oct. 11,2002.
Funeral arrangements were pending this morning at the Dunsford Funeral Home of Augusta.
Florence had been part of the Augusta community for more than 40 years. She was active in business, her church, and enjoyed her family.
She was edi-
tor of the Women’s Page at newspapers in Iowa as well as the Augusta Daily Gazette. Her editorial endeavors often earned awards from the Kansas Press Association.
Her active journalism career spanned the days of handset type to computerized typesetting. She enjoyed visiting with and writing about the “comings and goings” of Augustans.
For many years she lived in her home on Augusta Avenue in the Meadowview Acres Addition. A few years ago, she relocated to
the Cottonwood Point retirement complex.
She was a schoolteacher in the days of the “one-room schoolhouse” and taught at a rural school in Kossuth County, Iowa, before teaching at a “town school.” As a rural school teacher, she was responsible for firing up the schoolhouse stove before students arrived and shutting it down along with janitorial work after the students were gone for the day.
She was united in marriage June 18, 1935 at Algona, Iowa, to Daniel John “Jack” Zerbe at the home of her parents.
Following their marriage, the Zerbes lived in Wesley, Iowa, where they owned and published The Wesley News World, a small weekly newspaper.
In 1939, Florence and Jack purchased a larger weekly at Winfield, Iowa.
After selling the Winfield newspaper, the Zerbe family moved to Kansas and he became managing editor of The Augusta Daily Gazette.
The Zerbes became sole owners of the newspaper in 1963 following the death of Bert Shore.
Charles E. Wakefield
Charles Edward Wakefield, 89, Augusta, retired Mobil Oil refinery pipefitter, died Saturday, Oct. 19,2002.
Private service will be held. Visitation with family will be today from 4 to 6 p.m., at Dunsford Funeral Home in Augusta.
Survivors include: wife, Marie; daughter, Shirley Lietzke of Augusta; sister, Audine Grooms of Winfield; one grand-daughter; two great-granddaughters.
Memorials established with Augusta First Baptist Church and Total Home Care and Hospice.
Dunsford Funeral Home of Augusta is handling the arrangements.
Lisa Marie Kidd
Lisa Marie Kidd of Arkansas City, the 18-month-old great-granddaughter of Pat Braden and Robert Braden, both of Augusta, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002.
Her funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Saurday, Nov. 2, at St. James Catholic Church in Augusta.
She was preceded in death by grandmother, Lisa Braden and great-grandfather, Joe Collier.
Other survivors include: parents, John and Jennifer (Braden) of Arkansas City; grandparents, Julie and Raymond Hutchinson of Arkansas City, Ed Kidd Jr. of Atlanta, Jim Braden of Burden; great-grandparents, Vernon and Ava Deets of Burden, Edmond Sr. and Sally Kidd of Atlanta, Anita and David St. Peter of Wichita, Ruthanne Collier of El Dorado, Loyce and Darrel Crow of Winfield.
Memorial established with University of Kansas Medical Center for Liver Disease.
Hillside Funeral Home of Augusta has charge of arrangements.
Geneva Mae DeHoff
Geneva Mae DeHoff, 90, Augusta, homemaker, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002.
Her funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow, Nov. 6, at Dunsford Funeral Home in Augusta.
Survivors are: daughters, Betty Hardin of Andover, Joyce Ehret of El Dorado, Donna Vinson of Ardmore, Okla., and Anetta DeHoff of Wichita.
Memorial established with Midian Shrine Crippled Children’s Hospital, 130 N. Topeka, Wichita.
Dunsford Funeral Home of Augusta is in charge of the arrangements.

Patricia M. Waters, 66, Peabody, formerly of Augusta, homemaker, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002.
Her funeral services were pending at this morning with Baker Funeral Home in Peabody.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Don and Ora (Mitchell) Ehret.
Survivors include: son, Larry Frost' of Augusta; sister, Donna Allen of Augusta; two grandchildren.
