Boulder teen facing vehicular manslaughter charges in traffic death
A Boulder, Colo., teenager face: vehicular manslaughter charge: after allegedly driving the wrong way on the Denver-Boulder Turnpike early Sunday, causing a fatal head-on collision which left an Augusta resident dead.
Jennifer Fiskum, 19, was driving a 1996 BMW westbound in the east-bound lanes of U.S. 36 near the McCaslin Boulevard exit shortly after 7 a.m. and hit an oncoming Honda Civic, said Sgt. Craig LeVere of the Colorado State Patrol.
Randal “Randy” Christy, 36, of Augusta, a voice instructor at Wichita State University, was killed in the accident.
Investigators suspect alcohol was involved in the collision, LeVere said.
Fiskum, after being released from Avista Adventist Hospital without serious injuries, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide involving alcohol and reckless driving. Both drivers were alone and wearing seat belts.
Investigators didn't yet know Sunday where Fiskum had gotten on the Turnpike but say they think she may have hit a guard rail previously on the highway and spun around, then — disoriented — headed the wrong way, LeVere said.
The first call from a witness was reported to Broomfield emergency dispatchers at 7:09 a.m., when a man said he saw the BMW weaving across lanes of traffic near the Interlocken exit and that the car looked as if it had already been in an accident, said Boulder County Sheriff's Office Deputy Tim Kingston.
Kingston, who was on McCaslin Boulevard at the time of that call, arrived at the scene of the head-on collision about "a minute too late," he said. The crash was reported at 7:11 a.m.
Also shortly before the fatal crash,
the driver of another car traveling east bound near the 88th Street overpass swerved to miss the oncoming black BMW, spun 360 degrees and flipped, Kingston said. None of the three , people in that car was hurt.
Christy a christian singer and songwriter, was in Colorado for a student vocal competition. He had traveled the country but recently settled in Augusta, friends said.
"He had been on both coasts and then here he was in this little town, as happy as he had ever been in his life," said Kansas colleague and friend Steve Rue. "He said many times he had found his calling and he was truly happy."
For the past several weeks, Christy had been assisting the August Arts Council with a holiday choral production for the stage of the Augusta Theatre.
The status of that project, the Legacy Arts Ensemble Festival Choir and Children’s Choir, was in doubt this morning. The program featuring local and area singers as well as Newman University vocalists is scheduled for early December as the Christmas Gala Concert.
