Augusta teen dies in shooting

The funeral for Darrin Gammill, who was accidentally killed by a friend, will be Friday at his church in Augusta.
AUGUSTA — A 17-year-old Augusta High School junior died early Sunday after his 17-year-old friend shot him during target practice Saturday, Butler County Sheriff Stan Cox said.
Sheriffs officials think the shooting that killed Darrin Gammill was accidental, Cox said.
Harold Roth, Gammill’s stepfather, said Gammill’s best friend tripped, discharging the 12-gauge shotgun.
Roth described Gammill as a loving Christian who was always eager to help people.
At Augusta High, he was involved in cross country, track, student council and other activities.
He was also a member of Augusta’s First Baptist Church, where he was involved in the youth group.
Gammill had planned to join the Kansas Army National Guard, Roth said.
In addition to target shooting,
Gammill liked to hunt, fish and camp, Roth said.
In August, he passed a hunter’s safety course, scoring even better than his stepfather.
Officials
received a call for help shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday from Gammill’s friend.
Deputies found Gammill shot in the abdomen when they arrived at the scene, under a bridge at Southwest 60th Street about 1 1/2 miles west of Ohio Street north of Augusta.
Rescuers took Gammill by helicopter to Wesley Medical Center, where he underwent several hours of surgery before he was pronounced dead, according to the Sheriffs Department.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Dunsford Funeral Home, 201 E. Fifth St. in Augusta.
Gammill’s funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, 1501 State St. in Augusta.
The Darrin L. Gammill Memorial has been established with Prairie State Bank.
