Ruby Elizabeth Harness
Ruby Elizabeth Harness, 99, Wichita, retired public school teacher, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003.
Her service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 1, at Hillside Christian Church Chapel in Wichita. A graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 1 at Elmwood Cemetery in Augusta.
Ms. Harness was born Oct. 24, 1903 to parents, James Kent and Victoria (Moore) Harness in Augusta. Ruby graduated from Augusta High School, reached her teaching certificate from Kansas State Normal School, her master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo., and Wichita State University. Ruby taught at schools in the rural Augusta area until 1930, when she became a teacher at Garfield Elementary in Augusta. She became the principal there in 1937, continuing until the mid 1940’s when she moved to Wichita. Ruby then taught in the Wichita public school district, finishing her career at Fabrique Elementary from it’s opening until her retirement in 1964.
Ms. Harness belonged to the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 11, Augusta, Delta Kappa Gamma, and was a member of Hillside Christian Church, also teaching Sunday School there. She enjoyed traveling to the Holy Land, Europe, Russia, South America, Mexico, Canada, and Alaska. She was also an avid reader, attending and leading book club meetings and discussions of current literature.
She was preceded in death by parents, brothers, John D. Harness and Paul G. Harness, and nephew, David Harness.
Survivors: nephew and wife, James Kent and Suzanne Harness of Boulder, Colo.; niece, Victoria Harness of Plano, Texas; niece and husband, Carol Harness and Harvey Miller of Viola; five great nephews; five great-great nieces and nephews.
Memorials have been established with Kansas Christian Home, 1035 Southeast 3rd St., Newton, 67114, and Hillside Christian Church, 8330 E. Douglas, Wichita, 67206.
Lester D. Hufman
Lester D. Hufman, 70, Wichita, brother of Chester Hufman of Augusta, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003.
His funeral service was held today, Feb. 3, at Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado.
Other survivors include: wife, Helen; sons, Ronald of Mulvane, Joseph of Haysville; daughter, Rhonda Hufman of Wichita; brother, Harold of Wichita; one grandchild; three stepgrandchil-dren; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren.
Memorial established with American Heart Association.
Carlson Funeral Home of El Dorado handled the arrangements.
Bill Bidwell
William G. “Bill” Bidwell, 66, El Dorado, retired journalism instructor at Butler County Community College, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2002.
Bidwell had done freelance work for The Gazette over the years.
His funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, at the Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado.
Juan Carlos Lopez
Juan Carlos Lopez, 33, Bartlesville, Okla., father of Serena Rae Barnett of Augusta, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003.
Funeral service was held Monday, Jan. 27 at the Stumpff Funeral Home of Bartlesville.
Other survivors include: mother and stepfather, Solidad and A1 Kester; son, Colby Lopez; brother, Brandy Kester; sister, Josephine Lopez, all of Bartlesville.
Ruby C. Hill
Ruby C. Hill, 83, Augusta, homemaker, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Walnut Valley Memorial Park in El Dorado.
Survivors include: son, Bruce B. Hill of San Diego, Calif.; daughter, Rochelle Dunbar of Jones, Okla.; sister, Helen Haner of Wichita; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.
Memorial established with Shriners Childrens Hospital.
Carlson Funeral Home of El Dorado is in charge of the arrangements.
Timothy W. Smith
Timothy W. Smith, 36, Augusta, LAW Co. carpenter, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003.
Service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado.
Survivors include: son, Justin of Leon; daughter, Shianne, mother, Diane Eggleston, sister, Kim Hodny, all of Hays.
Memorial established with Smith Scholarship Fund.
Carlson Funeral Home of El Dorado has charge of arrangements.
