Frances Cyphers

Frances M. Cyphers, 84, Augusta, retired secretary to Augusta school superintendents, died Tuesday, May 6, 2003.
Her funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 9, at the Augusta First Christian Church.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 8, at Dunsford Funeral Home.
She was the daughter of Edward J. and Mary Rebekah (Smith) Swanson. They preceded her in death, as did a brother, Harold and two sisters, Grace McCabe, and Thelma Leichardt.
She attended Wichita schools, graduating from East High in 1937. For two years, she attended Friends University while working in the administrative offices.
She completed business school training and worked as a secretary for the remainder of her working life. For 28 years she was secretary to the Augusta superintendent of schools, working with five superintendents.
On Oct. 4, 1942 she married Paul E. Cyphers. They celebrated 60 years of marriage last year.
He survives, as do two sons and their wives; Stanley and Sharon Cyphers of Fairway, Donald and Phyllis Cyphers of Irvine, Calif.; two grandsons and their wives; Scott and Leslie Cyphers of Merriam, and Alex and Jen Cyphers of Denver, Colo.
She was a long time member of the First Christian Church, as well as the PEO Sisterhood.
Memorial gifts may be made to First Christian Church, Southern Care Hospice, or IDEA Inc. Endowment of USD 402, Augusta.

Leona Homing

Leona (DeMoss) Homing, 87, Destrehan, La., formerly of Augusta and Caney, died Saturday, May 10, 2003 in Destrehan, La. Mrs. Homing had been living near her daughter in Louisiana for the past five years.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, May 16; funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Graves Funeral Home of Caney. Burial will follow at the Moline Cemetery in Moline.
She was born on Sept. 23, 1915 in Grenola to Ernest W. and Alta (Robinson) DeMoss. She grew up near the Moline community. On May 28, 1933 she married Edwin James “Jim” Homing in Independence. They were married 57 years until his death on Nov. 11, 1990. They lived in Augusta for many years before being transferred to New Orleans, La. in 1965. After Jim’s retirement in 1972, they followed their hearts back to Kansas and settled in Caney. While living in Caney, Mrs. Homing was an active member of the Christian Church and was also involved in various clubs.
She was preceded in death by: parents, her husband, Jim; son, Tommy; grandson, Doug Howerter; brother, Paul DeMoss.
Survivors include: daughters, Karen K. Visnic of Logan, Ohio, Nancy Landry of St. Rose, La.; three grandchildren, Kerri Gamer of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, Jennifer Landry of St. Rose, La. and Ryan Landry of Thibodaux, La.; sisters, Irene Helton of Caney, Marilyn Jean Kiser of Bellflower, Calif., Evelyn Eales and Doris Robinson, both of Bella Vista, Ark.
Graves Funeral Home of Caney has charge of the arrangements.

Leona Horning

Vivian R. Salts

Vivian R. Salts, 89, Wichita, homemaker, mother and mother-in-law of Charlotte and Steve White of Augusta, died Tuesday, May 13,2003.
Her funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 16, at Broadway Mortuary Chapel in Wichita.
Other survivors include: sons, Howard W., Elmer Dale, Richard W.; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
