Eugene Brooks

Former Augustan Eugene A. “Gene” Brooks, 82, Wichita, retired businessman and banker, died on Monday, Aug. 4, 2003.
His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday ,Aug. 6, at Eastminster Presbyterian Church with burial at Wichjta Park Cemetery.
Visitation with family from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening, Aug. 5, at Downing & Lahey
Mortuary East in Wichita.
Gene was born at St. Francis Hospital on March 15. 1921 to Charles A. and Verna B. (Jacques) Brooks. He resided on the family farm in Valley Center.
He attended Bentley Schools and graduated from high school in 1939.
On March 28, 1942, he married his high school sweetheart, Eleanor L. Frey, the love of his life. They spent 61 wonderful years together.
He graduated from Wichita University, receiving a bachelor of science degree in business administration and accounting in 1943, and immediately entered the United States Air Force at Sheperd Field in Wichita Falls, Texas.
During the 26 years he lived in Augusta he operated a farm implement business and two car dealerships. He served the Prairie State Bank for 33 years and was vice chairman of the bank board for 12 years. He was recently honored by the bank as an “Honorary Lifetime
Director.”
Mr. Brooks was a member of Augusta Unified School District 402 Board of Education and board president. He was also a board member of Butler County Community College, Board of Trustees and board president.
He belonged to Rotary, Blue Lodge-32nd Degree Mason, The Wichita Consistory and the Shrine.
He also served on the board of directors of the Flossie A. West Foundation Trust.
He served as trustee of the Augusta First Methodist Church. He was a member of the Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Wichita, where he served on the finance committee and in several other ministries. During Mr. Brooks’ lifetime, he served not only his country, but also
his community and God. He highly valued service to his community, making it a better place to live and work. He considered education as a vital factor in a good community.
Mr. Brooks was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He took great pride in his family and was considered the “Patriarch” of teaching his sons and their families valuable lessons in life and how important God and family are to each of them. He lived by the Golden Rule each day of his life. He had many wonderful friends and acquaintances that he and his wife cherished immensely. He would often go out of his way to assist anyone in need. He was the “Cornerstone” of his family and will be missed greatly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles A. and Verna B. Brooks.
Survivors are: his best friend and wife, Eleanor “Ellie” of Wichita; sons and daughter-in-law, Randy L. Brooks of Overland Park, Dr. Scott A. and Vicki A. Brooks of Wichita; grandson Tyler and his wife, Lisa of Wichita, Zachary Brooks of Lawrence, Aaron Brooks of Long Beach, Calif.; twin great-granddaughters, Libby and Lauren Brooks of
Wichita; sister and brother-in-law, Joe and Bonnie Abell of Denver, Colo.; several nieces and nephews.
Memorials have been established with The Shrine Plane of Mercy Fund, Midian Shrine Temple, 130 N. Topeka, Wichita, 67202, and Eastminster Presbyterian
Church. Downing & Lahey Mortuary East has charge of the arrangements.

Cecil Roberts

Cecil G. Roberts, 62, Augusta, father of Bebee Thomas and Stephanie Paul, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003.
Visitation with family will be at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow, followed by the funeral service at 6 p.m., at Dunsford Funeral Home in Augusta.
He married Dorothy Vail on Sept. 30, 1958. She preceded him in death on Sept. 29,1999.
Other survivors include: sons-in-law, Tim Thomas and Mike Paul; grandchildren, Tabitha, Tyler, Samantha, Lindsey; mother, Beulah House; sisters, Leana Johnson, Loretta Sagi.
“We love you, Dad. You’ll be forever in our hearts.”
Dunsford Funeral Home of Augusta has charge of arrangements.
