Irene Welch

Irene Welch, 94, Leawood, formerly of Augusta, died Monday, Oct. 20,2003, at Villa St. Joseph in Leawood.
Her funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at the Augusta First United Methodist Church, 2420 N. Ohio.
Visitation with family will begin at 1 p.m. at the church, prior to the service. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Augusta.
Mrs. Welch was born Nov. 25, 1908 in Piedmont to Rollen Ray and Lettie Luciette Morrill Fooshee.
Following her graduation from Piedmont High School, she attended Central Commercial College and received a bachelors degree in home economics from Southwestern College in Winfield. During college, Irene was inducted into Kappa Omicron Phi Honor Society. Following graduation she held a number of teaching positions including one in Elkhart.
It was there that she met her sweetheart and future husband, Raymond Ward Welch. They were married in her mother’s home in El Dorado on Nov. 18,1935. Two sons were born to this union. Raymond Lee Welch and Wesley Howard Welch. Irene was active in school, community and church affairs. She was widely known as a tireless and cheerful volunteer. A member of the First United Methodist Church for over 60
years, she was a devoted participant of the Dorcas Circle. In addition to her volunteer activities, Irene was employed as a teacher of home economics and business commerce and as the secretary at the First United Methodist Church of Augusta for 17 years.
Irene will be remembered fondly by family and friends as a woman of great personal character and a committed Christian. She loved cooking, sewing, caring for loved ones, travel, and reading.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond Lee and Nancy Wheeler Welch of Radford, Va., Wesley Howard and Deb Welch of Leawood; grandchildren, Lara Borne, Janna Welch (Werner), Cole Welch, Matthew Welch, Meghan Dahl; great-grandchildren, Brendan, Kevin, and Natalie Borne, Carson Welch, Benjamin Isaac Werner; sisters, Thelma Sue Osborn, Luella (Penny) Kurtela; brother, John D. Fooshee.
A special thanks is given to the staff of Villa St. Joseph and Odyssey Hospice for their gentle and loving care to Irene during her final illness.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the First United Methodist Church of Augusta.
Dunsford Funeral Home of Augusta has charge of the arrangements.

Richard Maddux

Richard D. “Rick” Maddux, 52, El Dorado, retired oil well contract employee and city recreation coach, father of Jennifer Spencer of Augusta, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003.
His funeral service was held Monday, Oct. 20, at Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado. Interment followed in Sunset Lawns Cemetery in El Dorado.
Other survivors include: wife, Renee of El Dorado;
sons, Robert Maddux of Topeka, Jeffery Swank of Wichita, Andrew Maddux of El Dorado; daughters, Meghan Bergman of Broken Arrow, Okla., Daisee Maddux of Wichita, Rachel Maddux of El Dorado; parents, Bob and Alta Maddux of El Dorado; brother, Randy Maddux of El Dorado; five grandchildren.
Memorials in his memory for the El Dorado Youth Baseball Program may be left at Carlson Funeral Home.

Jean K. Mendenhall

Jean K. Mendenhall, 81, Augusta, former Beechcraft fabrication worker, former secretary for Santa Fe Bus Line and Augusta Gazette employee, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003.
Her graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, at Elmwood Cemetery in Augusta.
Survivors are: husband, Emery of the home; son, Kevin R. Mendenhall of McPherson; brother, Ivan Haskins of Douglass.
She was preceded in death by sons, Stevie and Kerry.
Memorial established with the Augusta Public Library.

Thomas Lawson Jr.

Thomas Lawson Jr., 72, Augusta, retired Union Construction worker, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003.
Visitation from noon until 8 p.m. today at Hillside Funeral Home in Augusta. There will be no local service.
His graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Roselawn Memorial Park in Terra Haute, Ind.
Survivors include: wife, Janice of Augusta; step daughter, Jeanne A. Matherly of Augusta; step son, Michael L. Call of Morris, 111.; sister-in-law, Freda Lawson of Terra Haute, Ind.
Memorial established with Medicalodge of Douglass, 619 S. Highway 77, Douglass, 67039.
Hillside Funeral Home of Augusta is handling the arrangements.
