Leona L. Michael
Leona L. (Reed) Michael, Wichita, formerly of Augusta, retired special education teacher, died on Sunday, March 12, 2006.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 14, at Cochran Mortuary
with graveside service at 2:30 p.m. that afternoon at the Deer Creek Oklahoma Cemetery.
The daughter of Cherokee Strip settlers, J.W. and Lila Reed, Leona graduated from Lemont, Okla, high school and Tonkawa Junior College.
She began teaching in a one room school in 1927. She later earned degrees from Northwestern in Alva, Okla., Phillips University and
Emporia. From 1967 until retirement in 1972, Leona taught special education classes at Augusta High School.
Her memberships included Upsilon Chapter, Alpha Delta Kappa, Business and Professional Women, Augusta First Christian Church.
In 1985, following the death of her husband, Carl Michael, she moved to Wichita, residing first at Twin Lakes and from 1993 until her death at Wichita Presbyterian Manor.
Survivors include: her daughter, Joyce Schneider of Wichita; son, James (Geraldine) Michael of London, England;
grandsons, Jeff Schneider, Keith (Brandy) Schneider of Wichita; two great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; one niece; one nephew; several great nieces and great nephews.
In addition to her husband, Carl, she was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters.
Memorials have been established with Good Samaritan Fund, c/o Wichita Presbyterian Manor,
P.O.Box 20440, Wichita, 67208, and Riverside Christian Church, 1001 Litchfield, Wichita, 67203.
Cochran Mortuary in Wichita is in charge of the arrangements.

Avanell N. Wiseman, 84, McPherson, formerly of Augusta, passed away on Friday, March 24, 2006.
Service arrangements were pending this morning with Stockham Family Funeral Home in McPherson.
LaVerne M. Helmer
LaVerne M. Helmer, 73, Victoria, Texas, formerly of Augusta, died on Wednesday, March 22, 2006, in Corpus Christi, Texas.
A private celebration of-his life will be held at his home in Victoria.
He was born on April 27, 1932 in Wichita, the son of Sam and Mary Helmer. He married Ada Lee Orr on Sept. 6, 1953. Mr. Helmer retired in 1993 from Mobil Refinery in Beaumont, Texas.
He is survived by: his wife, Ada Lee of Victoria; daughters, Kym Dickey and Kay Helmer, both of Augusta; son, Sam Helmer and his wife, Deana of Victoria;
sisters, Lora Rollings and husband, Earl of Bella Vista, Ark., Virginia Dickey and husband, Gene of Derby, LeAnne Patterson and husband, Joe of Olathe; brothers, Grant Helmer and wife, Jodene of Derby, Jim Helmer and wife, Kathy of Augusta; six grandchildren, Ryan and Chelsea Dickey, Seth Dennett, and Zachary, Hannah, and Sarah Helmer.
Arrangements by Rosewood Chapels in Victoria, Texas.
