Velma Jean Williams

Velma Jean (Meistrell) Williams, 75, Augusta, died on Memorial Day, May 26,2008.
Visitation and viewing will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, at Dunsford-Zeiner Funeral Home in Augusta. Visitation and graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, at the Culpepper Lakes Cemetery in DeValls Bluff, Ark.
Velma was born in Hays and was a native of Plainville; the daughter of Charles Edwin and Della Viola (Gordon) Meistrell.
Survivors include: her husband of 55 years, Carl Chester Williams; children, Carla J. Williams of Haysville, and John E. (Kristi) Williams of Las Vegas, Nev.; one granddaughter and four great-grandsons.
Arrangements are under the direction of Dunsford-Zeiner Funeral Home in Augusta.

Ellsworth Dixon Swaney

Ellsworth Dixon Swaney, age 80, of Lawrence, died Saturday, May 24,2008 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital due to complications from a recent heart attack.
Memorial service will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday at the Smith Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Rd, Derby. Inurnment will follow at El Paso Cemetery, Derby. Family and friends are invited to a gathering immediately following at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel, 600 S. Allen Street, Andover.
Mr. Swaney was born Jan. 1,1928 in Derby, the son of Bernard A. and
Madge (Dixon) Swaney. Dixon was raised on a farm near Derby. His maternal grandfather was Dr. William Ellsworth Dixon, one of the original Derby physicians. His paternal grandparents were Frank William and Jennie (Mc-Crea) Swaney, some of the original settlers of Sedgwick County.
Mr. Swaney graduated cum laude with his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Wichita State University in 1959.
Following graduation, he worked for Carey Salt and Cessna Aircraft companies in Hutchinson. In 1969 he moved to Lawrence to become treasurer for GPK, Inc., the owners of three Gibson Discount Center stores in Kansas.
Dixon developed psoriatic rheumatoid arthritis which spread to many of his bone joints in his later years.
He enjoyed reading western novels, watching western movies and spending time with his family and friends.
He was a member of the Lawrence First United Methodist Church.
He married Eloise Melander on March 25,1950. She survives of the home. He is also survived: by his son, Kurt and wife Julia, Broomfield, Colo.; his three grandchildren, Rachel, Erin and Andrew; his sister, Patricia Swaney, Fairfax, Va.
