Lawrence L. ‘Tbbby’ Smith
Lawrence L. “Tubby” Smith, 83, retired Joliet Mobil Oil head of fire safety, passed away May 6, 2008 in Portland, Ore.
Rosary, 7 p.m. Friday, May 9, service with Father Michael Schemm officiating, Saturday, May 10, at 10:30 a.m. both at the Dunsford-Zeiner Funeral Home of Augusta.
Interment in Elmwood Cemetery following the service.
He was born to Roy & Nancy (Brother-ton) Smith in Sharon Springs, Kan. They preceded him.
He graduated Augusta High Class of 1943 and served in the US Navy “Seabees” during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
He married Christine Collins in 1947, together they lived in Turkey from
1961-1965 and Joliet, Illinois from 1970-1988.
Christine preceded him in 1993 and he ater married Dorothy (Nance) Gruver, who preceded him in 2003.
lSurvivors: son L.D. “Drew” (Cindy) Smith, Longview, Wash; stepdaughter Kristi (Richard) Valasek, step-son Curtis Gruver, all of Wichita; sister Irene Taylor, Anderson, Ind; grandson Brian Smith, Berkeley, Calif; step-grandchildren Elizabeth and Michael Gruver. Also preceded in death by: son Nickey Smith, brother Bill E. Smith, sister Florence Thornton and step-son Kim McKenzie.
Memorial designations to the Augusta Historical Museum, Augusta Library or the Humane Society in care of the funeral home.
Smith began his career with Mobil Oil Sept. 22,1942 working evening shifts and Saturdays and Sundays while attending high school.
He filled various positions in the maintenance and operating departments.
In 1946, he began serving as operator of the Houdry, T.C.C., and Crude Units.
Smith was promoted to night superintendent March 1,1958.
He later received foreign assignments with refinery start-up operations in the Philippine Islands, Mersin, Turkey, and Singapore. He once had a domestic assignment in Dumas, Texas.
Smith’s Seabees service with the 122nd Nav-cal Construction Battalion was in the South Pacific and China.
He was discharged Jan. 1,1946. He was back at Mobil in Augusta the following month dismantling the No. 1 and No. 2 Crude Units where the machine shop would be built.
He was recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict and served on troop transports.
The transport made one complete trip around the world.
He was discharged from that service in December of 1951 and returned to Augusta as a shift breaker at the T.C.C. Unit.
His hobbies was working with youngsters in all types of sports and outdoor activities.
