children, then returned to the classroom while earning her BA degree in elementary education from Wichita State in 1967. Mary taught in several Butler County schools and retired in 1979 after 30 years, from the Towanda first grade as a Master Teacher from Circle Unified District.
Mary was a faithful Christian and through the years was very involved in the community especially Central Baptist Church on Santa Fe Lake. As an active member for over 60 years she served teaching Sunday school, playing the piano and organ, developing and leading the rhythm band for the children, singing in the choir and being a member of the women’s association. Through her loving and thoughtful nature she witnessed and ministered to her family and many friends and neighbors.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 47 years, who died in 1989; brothers, Paul, John, and George
Grist; sister, Marian Christy.
She is survived by: her daughter, Myra and husband Jim Slusser of Sand Springs, Okla, and son, Glen and wife Janice Snodgrass of Towanda; sisters, Anna Ayres of Andover, Winnie (Jerald) Reed of Decatur, Ala. and Ruth Evans of Wichita; brothers, Warren (June) Grist of Jenks, Okla.,, Walter (Janeva) Grist of Minneapolis, Minn.; her faithful sister-in-law Elizabeth “Amy” Snodgrass of Wichita; 6 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to Central Baptist Church for youth mission projects, 7421 SW Church Rd, Augusta, 67010.
