Ray Slyter
Ray Kenneth Slyter, 72, of Augusta, passed away Sunday, May 30, 2010 of congestive heart failure after a stroke four months earlier.
Ray was born in Miami Township, Kan. on September 3,1937. He graduated from Paola High School in 1955 and attended Independence (Kan.) Community College and was a distinguished football player named All State, All American and Most Valuable Lineman. Ray also played football for K-State where he received his bachelors. He later received his Masters from Wichita State University. He taught school in Sharon, Kan. and met and married Hazel (Holt). They moved to Augusta in 1967 and he taught and coached until his retirement in 1993.
Ray loved to farm, perform woodworking, watch football and spend time with family. He is survived by: his wife, Hazel; children, Kenneth (Wema) of Kent, Wash., Stacey (Joe) of Kansas City, Mo., Mark (Lisa) of Jackson, Miss.; and Kristey (Joe) Williams of Augusta; and grandchildren Marae, Riana,
Andre, Emily, Audrey, Catherine, Sydney, Sadie, Holt, and Halle; brother, Leonard (Dolores) of Pre-ston, Md., sister Lois (Ted) of Paola, Kan. and sister-in-law Ruth Slyter.
He was preceded in death by his brother Damon, sister, Maxine Brandt and parents Elmer and Anna (Rode-wald) Slyter.
Viewing 4-8 p.m., Wednesday, June 2 at Headley Funeral Chapel; service 11 a.m. Thursday, June 3, at First Baptist Church. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta.
