Former Augustan dies in Newton
Ray L. Smith, 91, El Dorado, formerly of Augusta, died this morning at Axtell Hospital in Newton.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado. Burial will be in the Sunset Lawn Cemetery.
He was born Feb. 6, 1893 in Kearney, Neb., to G.W. and Etta Kibby Smith.
He married Edna Howell Dec. 19, 1917 in Kansas City, Mo. She preceded him in death Feb. 2, 1984.
He moved to Augusta in 1917 and then to El Dorado in 1918. He was an oil field pipeline contractor and retired in 1955.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in El Dorado, Patmos Lodge 97 AF&AM, the Pipeline Association and the Rotary Club.
Survivors include a son, Ray
Smith of Wichita; a sister, Thelma Baskins of Los Angeles, Calif., and a granddaughter.

Ethel P. Smith dies in Winfield
Ethel E. Palmer Smith, 92, Winfield, died today at the Good Samaritan Center there.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Winfield. Rev. Bill Ester will officiate and burial will be in the Douglass Cemetery.
She was born Feb. 20, 1892 in Rock to Edward and Louetta Lowe Bailey.
She married Fred J. Palmer. He preceded her in death in 1970. She married Ozzo Smith in 1974 in Brea, Calif. He preceded her in death in 1978.
She lived in the Rock area most of her life.
Survivors include a niece, Florita Anderson of Overland Park; two great-nieces and two great nephews.

Bessie Olson funeral Monday
Bessie Olson, 98, Augusta, died Thursday at the Augusta Medical Complex.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Elmwood Cemetery. Rev. Richard Axmann of the First Baptist Church will officiate.
A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church library.
She was born April 15, 1886 in Alabama to Louis B. and Alice Stevens Clark.
She married William Olson Aug. 26, 1909 in El Dorado. He preceded her in death in 1952.
Survivors include a son, William L. Olson of Augusta; daughters, Alice Marie Solberg of Philomath, Ore., and Lula Mae Abel of Littleton, Colo.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Two brothers, Roy and Ray Clark, preceded her in death. The Dunsford Funeral Home of Augusta is in charge of arrangements.

Eunice Quimby dies in El Dorado
Eunice L. Quimby, 86, Leon, died Friday at the El Dorado Nursing Center.
Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the United Methodist Church in Leon. Rev. Jean Wilcox will officiate and burial will be in the Leon Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Leon United Methodist Church.
She was born Dec. 27, 1897 in Great Bend to William A. and Lucretia Elder Brown.
She married Loy Quimby July 16, 1919 in Great Bend. He survives.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Rebekah Lodge, both at Leon.
Other survivors include nieces and nephews.
Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado is in charge of arrangements.

Doris A. Orr died Sunday at 77
Doris Amanda Orr, 77, 123 E. Summit, died Sunday at the Augusta Medical Complex.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Dunsford Funeral Home. Dr. Charles R. Boyles will officiate and burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Wichita.
A memorial has been established with the First Christian Church of Augusta.
She was born March 26, 1907 in New Salem, Kan., to Bert and Little Bonnett Thirsk.
She married Ernest Orr in 1930. He preceded her in death.
She was a retired garment manufacturer from Pryor, Okla. She came to Butler County in 1973. She was a member of the Christian Church.
Survivors include nieces, Shirley Berner of Cuero, Texas, Lillian Goddard of Napavine, Wash., and Jean Leighton of Simi, Calif.; a nephew, Larry Thirsk of Security, Colo., and a sister-in-law, Pat Thirsk of Augusta.

Ruby Countryman dies at 73 today
Ruby Amanda Countryman, 73, Route 1, died today at the Augusta Medical Complex.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Dunsford Funeral Home. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Garfield (Kan.) cemetery.
A memorial to the American Diabetes Association.
She was born June 18, 1910 in Haven to John and Mary Michael Bennett.
She married Lester Countryman Aug. 31, 1927 in Larned. He preceded her in death in 1969.
She was a retired cook for the Neal, Kan., school district.
Survivors include sons, Jack of Puyallup, Wash., Billy of Hesston and Gary of Hartner; a daughter, June Casteel of Augusta; 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
