Harold ‘Hoss’ Cartwright

Harold M. “Hoss” Cartwright, 92, of Derby, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 14,
2010.
Visitation 1-4 p.m., Saturday, at Smith Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Rd, Derby. Rosary recited 7 p.m. Sunday; funeral mass at 10 a.m. on Monday, both at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church in Andover with burial following at 2 p.m.
Greenwood Cemetery, Eureka, Kan.
Harold was born to Jeremiah and Thelma Ruth (Olds) Cartwright on Nov. 21,1918 in Eureka.
Preceded by parents, brother, James Robert and sister, Marjorie May “Margie” English. Harold loved the family farm in the Flint Hills north of Eureka. He came to Wichita in 1939 for a job at Stearman, later Boeing, where he retired as a supervisor in 1981. At Emporia Teacher’s College he met Mary Gwendolyn “Gwen” Plain; they were married on Oct 12,1940 for 61 years until her death in 2001. To that union four children;
Mary Lynn (Jerry) Stevenson, Ft. Smith, Ark., H.D. (Deanna), Wichita, Roxanne (Al) Simpson, Tucson, Ariz.,and Cathy (Wes) Pechin, Derby; 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
A true member of the “Greatest Generation”, Harold served in the Army in WWII’s Pacific Theatre. One of his enduring legacies was generously sharing his life-long love of music and his skill in playing the guitar and mandolin with two generations of grandchildren and countless friends. Above
all, he was a loving and beloved husband, father and grandfather.
