Wallace W. Fowler 88, of Tuscon, Ariz.

Wally Fowler, 88, a native of Augusta, who served as a U.S. Marine during World War II, owned several businesses and played a vital role in community organizations, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2011, in Tucson, Ariz.
Wally will be interred at All Faiths Memorial Cemetery in Tucson following a private memorial.
Wally was born at home to Bill and Susie Fowler on Feb. 22, 1923. He was the eighth of nine children, attended Garfield Elementary and graduated from Augusta High School in 1941. Near the end of his first semester at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kan., he dropped out of college in response to the
bombing of Pearl Harbor to enlist in the Marine Corps.
During his war years, Wally performed a number of duties — guard, gunner and aircraft mechanic — but his most memorable involvement came during the invasion of Pelelui in the South Pacific where he fought with
the First Marine Division. During the month long battle to secure the island, he sustained two injuries which plagued him for the rest of his life.
After the war, Wally returned to Augusta with his wife of two years -- Imogene Kirsch of Spangler, Pa. — and settled into building a family and a career. He owned and operated Fowler's Super Service, Sandy's Drive-In, Simmons & Fowler Reality, Inc. (half owner) and Fowler's Retail Liquor Story.
In 1974, Wallv and Imogene moved to Tucson where he worked as a maintenance supervisor for the city's school system until his retire-
ment in 1988. Although he returned often to visit friends in Augusta, Wally called Tucson "home" for the remainder of his life. His wife Imogene passed away in 1988 and his second wife Dorothy Mallack died in 2000, after being married to Wally for 10 years.
Wally leaves behind his four children: Richard of Scottsdale, Ariz., Joseph of Paola, Kan. Sandra Bobbitt of Prescott, Ariz., and Kristin Schofield of Derby; four grandchildren: Todd Fowler, Clint Fowler, Bruce Fowler and Amanda Disney; one greatgrandchild, Aeven Disney; and his sister Julia of California,
Mo.
