Myrtle Defore 89, Augusta
Myrtle E. Defore, longtime Butler county resident, passed away
peacefully at her home on Saturday, Aug. 27,2011, surrounded by her family and friends. She was 89.
On April 16,1922 she was born Rock, Kan. to Taylor O. and Anna (Briles) DeWeese who preceded her to heaven. Also going before her was her younger sister, Jean Smart (Marian) and her younger brother, Homer (Bonnie Corbin) DeWeese. Her family originally came to Kansas as pioneers and had a homestead near the Richland area west of Douglass. Myrtle graduated from Latham High School. She joined the Army on May 25, 1943. She loved her country and after the war she married Clarence "Bud” Defore on Jan. 8,1946 in El Dorado. They farmed for many years. Later they worked at Boeing and J & B Implement. Her husband, Bud, preceded her to heaven in Dec. of 1982. After retiring from Boeing in 1984, Myrtle and three of her Army buddies toured Europe. They drove over 3,000 miles and had the adventure of their lives. She also took her grandchildren to Hawaii during their middle school years. She was a member of Eastern Star for over 50 years. Her passions during her retirement years were her yard, flower garden, KU and NBA basketball, and her grandchildren. She loved cooking and Martha Stewart. She bravely fought through cancer and many other illnesses.
She is survived by: her son, Charles "Chuck" Defore (Carolyn); her daughter, Donna Hoefgen (John); her daughter of the heart, Mary Lou Marley (Leland) and their families; her 3 grandchildren, Jenny Uhrmacher (Richard), Nick Hoefgen and John Defore (Cindy); granddaughter of the heart, Karen Laubhan; step grandchildren, Steve (Barb) and Chris (Jennifer) Johnson, and Megan Singlet; 6 greatgrandchildren, Jordan Arredondo, Jacob Uhrmacher, Haylee Hoefgen, Miles Hoefgen, Drake Defore, and Kaylyn Defore; great-grandchildren of the heart, Hope Laubhan and Caleb Laubhan; and step great-grandchildren, Kody, Jermy, Kendra, Nathan and Trinity.
Two grandchildren preceded her to heaven, Jacque and Barbara Hoefgen.
Mrs. Defore was also survived by her dear nieces, nephews, neighbors and a host of family and friends. She always had time to listen.
In her memory we ask you to honor the environment; plant some seeds and watch them grow or cook something yummy for your family and friends. Mama always said "Be good and I love you."
Visitation 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. this evening and service will be 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 31, 2011, all at Headley Funeral Chapel, Augusta.
