Walnut
An elderly Augusta man was struck and killed by a petroleum tanker truck while crossing a downtown street late last night.
At approximately 10:15 p.m., 70-year-old Ernie Londagin of 217 1/2 State, was crossing Walnut Street (U.S. 77) at Third Street when a southbound 1980 Peterbilt semi-trailer truck driven by Henry D. Berlin of Potwin struck him.
It was the first pedestrian traffic fatality in several years for the city.
Londagin was thrown more 100 feet by the impact, causing him to suffer massive injuries, according to authorities. He was declared dead at the scene of the accident by deputy county coroner Dr. Ron Varner and was transported to Dunsford Funeral Home in Augusta by a Butler County ambulance.
Augusta chief of police Steve Shaffer said Berlin, who was driving for Total Petroleum Inc. of Ardmore, Okla., at the time of the incident, would not be charged in the accident. Shaffer said that skid marks and the point of impact indicated that Londagin had simply come out of the darkness into the path of Berlin’s truck.
A funeral service for this construction laborer will be 3 o’clock tomorrow afternoon at the Dunsford Funeral Home chapel with Rev. George Goudie of the First Southern Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Seltzer Cemetery.
Ernest “Ernie” James Londagin was born May 16, 1914 in Thomas, Okla., as a son of Joseph and Mary Mullin Londagin.
He was married to the former Geneva Mae Monroe. She preceded him in death late last year.
Survivors include two sons, Keith of Custer City, Okla., and Leroy of Santa Fe, Texas; four daughters Elizabeth Jones of Texas, Darlene Giblet of Chandler, Okla., Juanita Knox of Carnie, Okla., and Pat Jackson of Davenport, Okla.; three brothers, Delbert of Haskell, Okla., Dwight and Dwane, both of Ponca City, Okla., and a sister, Thelma Havice of Augusta.
