EARLENE COX . . . Friday funeral
Earlene Cox dies at 63
Earlene I. Cox, 63, Allen’s Park, Colo., formerly of Augusta, died Monday at St. Luke’s Hospital in Denver.
Her service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Church of Christ in Augusta. Bill Buggeln will officiate and burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
She was born Aug. 28, 1920 in Kansas to Lee and Vera Johnson Dennett.
She married Monroe S. Cox June 6, 1943 in Augusta. He survives.
She was a former school teacher.
Earlene and her husband operated a small grocery store, Cox’s Market, before building the Village Market across the street at 1010 Ohio. They opened the grocery store, Village Bake-ette, and in the 1950s, her parents, Lee and Vera Dennett, started the Village Decorative Shop in that same location. This may have been Augusta’s first shopping center-type building.
Earlene and her husband became interested in Colorado in the 1950s. They sold their business and moved to the Estes Park area about a decade ago.
She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Other survivors include a son, Gregory of Salida, Colo.; her mother, Vera Dennett of Augusta; a grandson, Dorian Lee Cox of Salida.
Elizabeth Smith dies in Winfield
Elizabeth S. Smith, 60, Winfield, formerly of Douglass, died Sunday at a hospital there.
Her service was at 10:30 a.m. today at the Miles Memorial Chapel in Winfield. Burial was in the Highland Cemetery there.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.
She was born Aug. 22, 1923 in Douglass to Bert and DeVena McKay Bannon.
She married Ray D. Smith Sept. 25, 1941 in Newton. He survives.
She was co-manager of the Village East condominiums in Winfield.
Other survivors include a son, Darwin Smith of Cunningham; brothers, Virgil Bannon of Winfield, Harold Bannon of Rock and three grandchildren.

Memorial fund set for Earlene Cox
A fund has been established in memory of Earlene Cox, a former Augustan, who died Monday in a Denver, Colo., hospital.
The memorial is for the Teaching Fund, Church of Christ, 1470 Fishcreek Road, Estes Park, Colo. 80517.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Church of Christ in Augusta. Bill Buggeln will officiate and burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Cox and her husband, Monroe, operated a small grocery store in Augusta before building the Village Market across the street at 1010 Ohio. They moved to Colorado about 10 years ago.
Survivors include her husband, Monroe; a son, Gregory of Salida, Colo., and her mother, Vera Dennett of Augusta.
The Dunsford Funeral of Augusta is in charge of arrangements.

James R. Cox dies at 63
James Robert Cox, 63, El Dorado, father of Jim Cox of Augusta, died Monday at St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita.
His service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in El Dorado. Rev. Harold Kieler will officiate and burial will be in Sunset Lawn Cemetery there.
A memorial has been established with the American
Cancer Society.
He was born Dec. 22, 1920 in El Dorado to George and Martha Soderberg Cox.
He married Doris Bloir July 26, 1947 in Dallas, Texas. She survives.
Cox retired from Getty Oil Co. in 1982 where he worked as a heavy equipment operator.
He served in the U.S. Army in the military intelligence division during World War II. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers.
Other survivors include sons, Jeff of El Dorado and Steve of Solana Beach, Calif.; daughters, Ava Cox of Seabrook, Texas, Dana Bell of Neosho Falls; mother, Margaret Seifert of El Dorado; two grandchildren, Gretchen and Lanie Cox, both of Augusta.
Kirby Morris Funeral Home of El Dorado is in charge of arrangements.
