Claire L. Brown
91, AUSTIN, TEXAS
Claire L. Brown passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012 at his home in
Austin, Texas.
A memorial service will be Brown held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, at the Sun City/Cow-an Creek Amenities Center in Georgetown, Texas, with Dr. Kelly Barnett officiating.
He was born May 6, 1921 in El Dorado, and lived in Augusta for over 40 years before relocating to Texas in 1991. After graduating from school in El Dorado, he married his high school sweetheart, Vivian Witherspoon, in 1941. With the outbreak of World War II, Claire enlisted in the Army Air Corp and served in Europe as a light aircraft pilot. Following the war, he returned to Augusta and continued his four-decade career in the maintenance department of the Mobil Oil Refinery. While rising to a management position at the Mobil plant, Claire also remained active in the Army Reserves and finally serving with the National Guard's Corp. of Engineers. As a Battalion Officer, Claire took his leave from the
military at the honored rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Following his well-earned retirement, Claire and Vivian moved to Harlingen, Texas where they honed their grace and skill with countless hours of square dance. They also were very active in their local golf leagues and tutoring grade school students. Claire could never completely leave his management duties behind and for period of time even supervised their retirement estate's golf course to keep him busy.
Traveling was always a big part of their lives, whether it was simply taking the motor home on a road trip, going for a relaxing ocean cruise, visiting foreign lands like Egypt, Germany, Spain or their many excursions to Mexico. Following the passing of his wife in 1999, Claire remained in Harlingen for the next 12 years. In 2011, he moved to the Sun City retirement community in Georgetown, Texas where he continued to enjoy his passion for square dancing, workouts at the gym and Friday night card games at the community center.
Claire was preceded in death by his brother, James Brown of Augusta and Vivian, his lovely wife of 58 years.
He is survived by: his four children, Cheryl Johnson, Marcia Kirkpatrick, both of Georgetown, Gary Brown of San Diego, Calif., and Scott Brown of Beaumont, Texas,; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Claire Brown was a man admired by all. Claire was always a friendly neighbor, a dedicated employee, a decorated soldier, a trusted friend, a devout Christian, a supportive brother, a mentor as a father and a devoted, loving husband. He was a selfless man who went through his life helping others. He was chivalrous and a true gentleman. He was a great man and we thank him for sharing his life with us. He will be deeply missed, but will always hold a special place in our hearts and minds.
Memorial donations may be sent to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation / 1317 King Street - Alexandria, VA 22314.
