Victoria M. Rigg
96, AUGUSTA

Victoria Madeline Rigg, 96, passed away Thursday,Oct. 24, 2013.
Funeral service 10 a.m. Monday, Oct.28, 2013 at Headley Funeral
Chapel, Augusta. Burial will follow at Leon Cemetery, Leon.
Victoria was born on Aug. 3,1917 in Warren, R.I., to John and Agatha (Janusz) Bednarz. She attended school in Warren until the age of 16 when the family had to leave to go to Connecticut during the Depression for work. She became a nanny to twin girls of an affluent Connecticut family.
After returning to Warren when work became more plentiful, she went to work for J. J. Newberry Company department store as their bookkeeper. She walked the few blocks from her parents’ home in all kinds of weather... even a hurricane. She had two younger brothers, Frank and Joe. Joe gave her the nickname “Speed” because she walked so fast and he had a hard time keeping up with her. The nickname stuck for the rest of her life in the Bednarz family and among her friends.
She met Lauren Howard Rigg while he was in PT Motorboat Training in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. He was sent to the South Pacific shortly there after. On a short leave on June 11, 1945 they married at Newkirk, Okla. Lauren went back to war and Victoria stayed in Kansas waiting for his return. They first lived in El Dorado, and then moved to Yates Center, finally ending up in Augusta. Together they had four children, James Lee, Lauren Dale, John Robert and Patricia Ann. John died shortly after his birth.
Victoria did not drive a car, but after the death of Lauren on Jan.2,1969 she had to find a way to make a firing and she began a long career of babysitting in her home and for various church gatherings. Through this work she found that she became a mother and grandmother many times over as each family became a part of her fife.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers and son, John.
Surviving her: her children, James (Lea) Rigg, Dale (Karry) Rigg and Patty (Paul) Blake; nine grandchildren, Jamey Rigg, Kelly Rigg, Scott Rigg, Troy Rigg, Brian Rigg, Todd Rigg, James Blake, Heather Krumnow and Sean Blake; 13 great-grandchildren, T. J., Aislynn, Ethan, Evan, Brandy, Brian, Braden, Kaylee, Peyton, Noah, Tory, Cordelia and Eli.
Memorial donations to Amedisys Hospice or to Alzheimer’s Association.
