AUGUSTA
Joyce M. Knapp, 86
Joyce Marie (Turnquist) Knapp, RN, beloved mother and grandmother, entered her eternal home with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Jan.
25, 2014 at the age of 86.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m Monday at Headley Funeral Chapel,
Augusta. Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan.28, 2014, at the First Baptist Church, Augusta. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta.
Joyce was born Sept.9, 1927 in Jamestown, ND. She lived in an orphanage until she and her brother Richard were adopted by Helmer and Treva Turnquist. Joyce was graduated from North High in Minneapolis, Minn, in 1945. In November 1965, Joyce married Darrell Eugene Knapp. He preceded her in death in 2007.
Joyce and Darrell moved to rural Augusta in 1970, where they raised their children, Chuck and Mary. Joyce worked numerous jobs to help supplement the family income. She was a housekeeper, cook for USD #402, a nurse aide and a ward clerk at the Augusta Regional Medical Complex. She decided to earn her nursing degree late in life, and was a proud graduate of the Butler County Community College Nursing Class of 1986 at the age of 58. She worked as a Registered Nurse at the Augusta Regional Medical Complex and later helped set-up the infirmary and established medical protocols at the El Dorado Correctional Facility. She later taught at Butler Community College in the Allied Health Department.
Teaching was one of Joyce’s passions. She loved her students and they loved her, as evidenced by her nomination as Outstanding Instructor in 2010. She also enjoyed teaching Sunday School and how to paint. One of her greatest joys was helping someone get to know Jesus Christ.
Throughout the years, Joyce would pour herself into pursuing other interests by volunteering for several organizations, including the American Red Cross, Eastern Star, 4-H, the JJaSpital Auxiliary of Kansas and the National Federation of Republican Women. She served proudly in several leadership positions in these organizations and others, where she touched many lives with her spunk, great sense of humor, tenacity and warm smile.
Joyce loved her family. She and Darrell were married more than forty years before his death, and one thing they had in common was their devotion to their children and grandchildren. Joyce was proud of all of her grandchildren, and her last words on earth were reserved for her oldest grandson Michael when she said, ”You are such a handsome boy.” A gift he will forever treasure.
Joyce leaves a legacy of overcoming obstacles, meeting challenges head-on, hundreds of well-trained Certified Nurse Aides and a myriad of special friendships.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Helmer and Treva Turnquist; her brother, Richard Turnquist; and her husband Darrell.
She leaves: her son, Chuck Knapp (Chelle); daughter, Mary Statton (Ken); grandchildren, Michael Knapp, Joshua Knapp, Daniel Knapp, Lily Knapp, Steven Statton and Philip Dunson; and her extended family, Mike and Kathy Tipton, Ruby Hubbard, Kara Tipton Smith and her children, Kaleb and Chloe.
Memorial donations may be made to the Augusta First Baptist Church, the American Red Cross or the First United Methodist Choir.
